MTA NYC Transit (NYCT) serves more than 5.6 million subway customers and 2.5 million bus customers on an average weekday. Its 48,000 employees provide mass transit and paratransit service throughout the five boroughs of NY City, including operating almost 6,400 subway cars at 472 stations, and more than 5,700 buses at more than 15,000 bus stops.

The Environmental Protection division of the NYC Transit office of System Safety is responsible for compliance, oversight, and technical assistance on generation, handling and control of hazardous materials to minimize release to air, water and soil. 

This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Administration of Hazardous Waste Disposal, Infectious Waste Disposal and Environmental Sampling/Analysis contracts
  • Oversight of the Chemical Bulk and Petroleum Storage Tank Programs with respect to their installation, registration and associated fees
  • Chemical spill response, investigation and closure
  • Compliance oversight of the Storm Water Management Program
  • Environmental audits compliance
  • Hazardous Waste Minimization Committee
  • Oversight of Air Pollution Prevention Program
  • Compliance oversight of environmental regulations with respect to facilities and capital construction projects
  • Develop and review of environmental protection policies and procedures
  • Oversee the EMS Program

Job Description:
The Environmental Protection division of the NYC Transit Office of System Safety is seeking an ambitious individual to join a skilled and talented group that ensures the safety of millions of New Yorkers who ride our buses and subways each day.  Under supervision, the System Safety Specialist will manage hazardous waste contracts, prepare and/or review air pollution permits, perform field surveys and review facility records to determine compliance with various environmental regulations and NYC Transit Policies.  In addition, the System Safety Specialist will prepare comprehensive reports on environmental compliance issues, review and interpret existing and proposed environmental regulations and analyze programs and policies to ensure NYC Transit compliance with environmental regulations.  The System Safety Specialist must be available for emergency response duties (in a company vehicle) and must have a valid Driver’s License.

System Safety Specialist I - IV:

  • A BA/BS from an accredited college in engineering, fire safety, environmental or occupational safety, ergonomics, statistics, mathematics, chemical, physical or biological science, industrial hygiene, safety management, or a related field; plus at least two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional safety workor
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six (6) years of full-time professional system safety work acquired while working for the New York City Transit; or
  • Educational and/or experience equivalent to that listed above. A master’s degree may be substituted for one (1) year of experience. However, all external candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least one (1) year of experience as describe above. Additional experience needed for higher levels.
