Sustainability Manager / Specialist (Environmental)

Job Description

  • This position will work with key functions (i.e. business/operational leadership, supply chain, environmental and other technical functions, R&D, etc.) in assisting with the development, communication and execution of PQ Corporation’s sustainability vision and strategy.  Will provide subject-matter expertise and analysis to enterprise-wide environmental sustainability objectives and projects.
  • Will assist in and provide subject-matter expertise in the development and implementation of the Company’s Corporate Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability Position and associated policies/processes.
  • Develops and manages the database of sustainability indicators and performance metrics for the Corporation, particularly on the environmental side (i.e. greenhouse gas, carbon markets, waster generation/disposal, water consumption, etc.).  Monitors progress/deliverables and develops reports or other materials communicating status.
  • Assists in developing and implementing the Company’s CSR reporting strategy, both online and to key stakeholders (i.e. UN Global Impact, Industry Associations, customers and the public, etc.).
  • Conducts and/or provides support in supply chain reporting (i.e. sustainability surveys, CDP supply chain survey.  EcoVadis and other applicable reporting schemes).
  • Analyzes sustainability results on an ongoing basis to effectively determine progress and identify areas needing continuous improvement.
  • Manages sustainability and associated environmental projects to ensure achievement of sustainability goals and objectives, including external/internal resources.
  • Works collaboratively across the organization in proposing and implementing sustainability initiatives, considering factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility and acceptance.
  • Other tasks/projects assigned by the Vice President of Environment and Sustainability.

 Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Environmental Science/Chemistry/Earth Sciences required.  Prefer chemical/environmental background.  Master’s degree in same or sustainability-related area is a plus.
  • 5-7 years of experience in corporate sustainability, including (2) years of experience in program/project management necessary.  Environmental specialist/management experience in chemical industry is desirable, especially at operating level. 
  • Ongoing awareness of industry trends, governmental regulations and sustainability best practices.
  • Subject matter expertise in environmental metrics and greenhouse gases, waste, water/energy conservation, carbon footprint, life-cycle analysis and reporting schemes such as GRI, etc.
  • Critical thinking skills for developing and implementing sustainability initiatives while taking into account project practicality and economic viability.
  • Collaborative orientation and relationship building abilities with key internal and external stakeholders, including the regulatory community, public interest/community groups/NGO’s, customers, etc.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in using associated sustainability computer software/databases, including excel and other presentation software.
  • Strong mathematic skills, with experience analyzing, reporting and summarizing data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in effective presentations and facilitation.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally on an as needed basis.
