Senior Project Geologist / Environmental Engineer

This position is responsible for the management and administration of environmental assessment, remediation and compliance projects that are part of the Vernon Remediation and Closure project. These activities are required for compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and legal agreements and orders. These projects and activities involve consultants, contractors and plant staff. This position will report directly to the Director of Remediation, Project Compliance – Vernon Closure and Remediation Project.

The Project Geologist/Engineer will assist with the management of DTSC and City of Vernon required activities during the Closure of Vernon facility, including the decontamination and deconstruction of the containment building, RCRA Facility Investigations and Corrective Action programs. The position will include oversight of monitoring, assessment, remediation programs conducted by consultants and staff. Project administration duties will include budget tracking, invoice review and facilitating contracting.

  • Review of technical documents prepared by consultants to ensure quality and timely submittal to regulatory agencies and management.
  • Oversight of environmental consultants during field work to ensure compliance with workplan procedures and best industry practices. Audit workplan procedures.
  • Track consulting budgets, scopes of work, review invoices and work with Director and Controller to update budgetary management tools for tracking budgets versus expense.
  • Prepare regulatory compliance summary memo and document status updates for submittal to the DTSC on a weekly basis.
  • Prepare reports of monthly CAP cleaning activities for submittal to the City of Vernon.
  • Update and maintain detailed project compliance schedule (Microsoft Project) for submittal to DTSC and for internal management tracking.
  • Ensure compliance with Closure Plan for the decontamination and deconstruction of the facility by attending regular meetings with contractor, Resident Engineer and Construction manager. Report findings to Director on a daily basis.
  • Assist Director and Controller in preparation of regular presentations to executive management on technical and budget status updates
  • Maintain effective working relationships with outside consultants, vendors, and regulatory agencies as well as plant/corporate staff, EHS, and Legal personnel.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Director of Remediation, Project Compliance – Vernon Closure and Remediation Project.

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required to perform this job.

  • Bachelor of Science Degree with 8-12 years’ experience or Master of Science Degree with 6-10 years’ experience with environmental project management including site assessment, remediation and monitoring programs.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical reports, agency regulations and legal documents.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and email summaries.
  • Effective verbal communicator and collaborator.
  • Experienced in the preparation of budgets, schedules and presentations.
  • Experience working on assessment, remediation or compliance projects with the DTSC and RWQCB.
  • Field experience managing assessment activities such as drilling, soil and soil vapor sampling at industrial facilities.
  • Field experience managing groundwater assessment and monitoring programs such as monitoring well installation and sampling.
  • Experience with sites impacted by lead, cadmium, VOCs and metals.
  • Experience with EPA Title V or working with SCAQMD air issues.
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER Trained.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels staff and management.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, staff, consultants and attorneys.
  • Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, anddraw valid conclusions.
  • Proficient in the preparation of spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
  • Familiar with the preparation of schedules in Microsoft Project
  • Proficient in the preparation of presentations in Microsoft Power Point
