Senior Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)

The Senior Manager of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) will be tasked with maintaining overall program compliance & operations, executing strategic business plans, and encouraging continuous process improvement efforts at all levels of the Institute.

The Senior Manager of EH&S will possess excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills, while remaining articulate, agile and self-motivating. The incumbent will be technically skilled and be able to effectively motivate high performance, manage change and resolve conflicts. 

The Senior Manager will provide expertise in the creation of leading indicators and Occupational/Environmental Health and Safety Management Systems.


  • Act as EH&S Administrator in the absence of EH&S Senior Director
  • Oversee Institutional Environment of Care and Sustainability Officer and provide oversight for Institutional Environmental compliance and sustainability.
  • Manage and provide oversight for DFCI’s Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance assurance program, including Fleet safety and all regulations found at 49 CFR.
  • Supervise EHS Program Manager and Program Coordinator to ensure management of EHS office and programs.
  • Chair Workforce Risk Reduction team, lead accident investigation team in analysis of work-related accidents. Inspect and analyze accident causes, hazards conduct root cause analysis and make recommendations for corrective and preventative actions.
  • Functioning as the key EHS contact for satellite clinics and non-Longwood locations. Providing key technical guidance and facilitating achievement of program goals & objectives.
  • Chairs DFCI fire safety committee responsible for providing fire safety oversight for all leased and owned spaces.
  • Working with Facilities Management and Real Estate, manage safety design and operationalization / start-up of new sites / renovations
  • Developing & maintaining a measurement system to track performance metrics. Compiling, reviewing, analyzing & interpreting data in support of EH&S quality assurance and performance improvement activities.
  • Manage special projects as made necessary by EH&S program demands.
  • Audit and conduct risk assessments for higher risk areas, including Animal Resources Facility, Materials Management, and Facilities Operations.
  • Work with department administrators and staff to reduce risk and provide follow up to incidents.
  • Participation in the Chemical Emergency Response Team, including on-call response, written evaluations of chemical spills, restocking of supplies used in spill clean-up.
  • Conduct air, noise and other monitoring as needed; update manuals, policies and procedures as directed by EH&S Sr. Director.
  • With other members of the department, implement and conduct training programs which contribute to the compliance of environmental and safety management: includes but is not limited to Orientation, Annual OSHA trainings, others as needed.
  • Conduct annual respirator fit-tests, as needed.
  • Maintain membership in Institutional Safety Committee, report and maintain performance indicators as required.

Supervise Safety Specialist and provide oversight for:

  • Manage OSHA compliance for Institute: policies & procedures, training content, regulations, and documentation retention.
  • Manage and document OSHA compliance in Facilities shops, including respirator program, lock-out/tag-out program, job safety analyses, hazardous materials management, Confined Space Program, PPE, and employee exposure monitoring through sampling and investigation.


  • The incumbent will have supervisory responsibility for 2 FTE's.


  • Bachelor's required, Master's preferred. 
  • 7+ years of relevant career experience required. 
  • 5+ years of managing workforce members required. 
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) highly desired. 
  • CIH and/or CHMM certifications preferred; OSHA and 30 preferred. 
  • Must attend and successfully complete annual Hazardous Waste Operations Training (minimum 40 hour initial with 8 hour annual refresher)
  • Expected to maintain CEU credits/certification if applicable. 
  • Ability to assume on-call responsibilities and respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. 
  • Ability to work with personnel at all levels of the organization. 



  • Ability to evaluate worksites for potential hazards, conduct necessary monitoring, write reports and relate information to all levels of DFCI staff.
  • Ability to determine chemical characteristics of the waste handled and inspected. 
  • Understand and comply with regulations and agencies such as RCRA, OSHA, EPA, DOT, MADEP, and BFD Standards. 
  • Ability to clean hazardous material spills and wear an SCBA. Demonstrate clear thinking during a crisis. Ability to isolate hazards using hierarchy of controls.   
  • Ability to interpret new regulations and implement programs to meet the requirements of the laws.
  • Ability to conduct training sessions aimed at a wide range of staff backgrounds and educational experience.
