Senior Manager Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Must have pharmaceutical experience.

This position leads EHS strategy for 4 R&D Labs and 2 Production facilities.

Job Responsibilities:
As a member of the Corporate EHS team the Senior Manager Environmental Health and Safety will create a strategic partnership with department leaders to assist in identifying workplace safety and health risks and implementing control measures that align with site and corporate initiatives. The Senior EHS Manager is responsible for knowing, interpreting, and appropriately applying all applicable federal, state, and local EHS laws, statutes and regulations.

  • Lead site audits, risk assessment activities and implement corrective action promptly to ensure company and regulatory compliance.
  • In partnership with operational leadership, set up and maintain safety training programs in all applicable safety competency areas. Assure training is appropriately documented, reviewed constantly to assure compliance and timeliness and maintain appropriate written records/ documentation of such training being conducted and reinforced.
  • Understand applicable state and federal and regulatory requirements for safety, hazardous waste and industrial hygiene.
  • Lead and provide training for company’s incident response team.
  • Oversee hazardous waste program to ensure waste is being disposed of according to all local, state, and federal regulations.  Responsible for submitting all required reports and fees associated with hazardous waste disposal.  Will work with sourcing department and hazardous waste vendor to continuously evaluate options for reducing volumes and costs.
  • Ensure completion of regulatory documents, reports and other recordkeeping requirements.
  • Work closely with plant leadership and scientific staff to assure that appropriate process safety considerations are being and that practices and procedures are planned and followed. Examples range from providing appropriate PPE to conducting a full safety assessment of the project.
  • Train, mentor and supervise EHS staff at US locations.  Have the ability to work closely with Human Resources as needed.
  • Provide oversight in managing the Occupational Health program.
  • Provide oversight to Security program including Department of Homeland Security responsibilities.
  • Provide supervision and support for EHS programs at other locations.
  • Responsible for overseeing the development of the Industrial Hygiene program.
  • Ensure appropriate recordkeeping and regulatory reporting is in place.
  • Ensure comprehensive employee and contractor orientation for safety is conducted.
  • Participate in and assist with the development of continuous improvement activities and cost savings initiatives.
  • Guide and promote safe work performance by developing and enforcing safety policies, implementing safety campaigns, and training supervisors and employees on EH&S expectations.


  • Bachelors Degree in Chemical Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Engineering or closely related degree required.
  • 10 years experience in Environmental, Health, & Safety compliance required.
  • Strong and complete understanding / experience with Process Safety (PHA, MOC, PSSR, Mechanical Integrity, etc) required.
  • 5 + years of management experience developing & implementing EHS related programs in a pharmaceutical or chemical manufacturing environment preferred.
  • 5 + years experience of EH&S permitting, processes, regulations and reporting required.
  • Implementing EHS related programs including e.g. OSHA and PSM a must.
  • Experience dealing with Hazardous Materials and Chemicals
  • Training in Risk & Hazard Analysis, Safety & Leadership, BBS, and Continuous Improvement a major plus.
