Senior Environmental Engineer


  • Prepare necessary air, storm water, and solid waste permits, and supports the existing environmental permits for the facility. 
  • Conduct internal inspections to verify continuing compliance with all applicable air, water, wastewater, storm water, and solid waste regulations and permits. Serve as a liaison for regulatory agency audits, corporate internal audits, and ISO 14001 third party audits.   Develop and track audit action items.
  • Prepare all necessary regulatory reports including SARA Toxic Release Inventory, annual emission inventory, hazardous waste annual report, SARA 312 updates, Tier II reports, etc.
  • Monitor environmental activity at both the state and federal level and continuing site activities to determine if new regulations or revised regulations or revised operations may affect the environmental program.
  • Maintain and improve the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
  • Negotiate permit conditions and settlement of compliance issues with regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain all records to meet requirements of the various regulations.
  • Develop and manage the environmental program to meet plant, business unit, EPA, and Responsible Care requirements.  Assist other business unit plants and organizations as needed with environmental issues.
  • Manage and coordinate the annual Training Plan to meet RCRA, SWPPP, SPCC and ISO14001 and other regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and administer corporate environmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, codes, and rules are observed and adhered to.
  • Team player with strong communication skills, orientation to details and possessing the ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities at the same time.
  • Supervise consultants, and contractors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Understands and helps implement the SBU HSES / Responsible Care Policy and related objectives.
  • Aware of potential environmental, health, safety and security impacts in area of responsibility and the consequences if an upset occurs.
  • Understands and implements any  parts of the site's Environmental Compliance Plans, Waste Management Plans      and Emergency Response Plan that applies to area of responsibility. 
  • Participates in the site's on-going Pollution Prevention Process.
  • Participates in the site’s HSE&S processes and training activities.
  • Is knowledgeable and complies with all state, federal, and local regulations and complies with AkzoNobel standards and directives.


  • B.S. Degree in Chemical or Environmental Engineering.
  • A minimum of  ten years’ experience in the environmental arena (air, water, solid waste), in the Chemical Process,  Petrochemical or Oil industry.
  • Experienced in the areas of RCRA Permitting and Title Five. Proven experience in Change Management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and meet competing deadlines. General knowledge of chemical plant operation.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience dealing with all EPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of Illinois regulations, waste incineration and ISO 14001 experience a plus.
