Safety Specialist

Job Summary: 
As a key leader of our Operations Department, this position manages and oversees Metropolitan Market health and safety programs on a companywide basis; ensures compliance with health and safety regulations, standards, and procedures; provides technical leadership with an emphasis on continuous improvement, product quality, and team member safety.

Specific Job Duties:
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides leadership, direction, and oversight for company food safety and ensures regulatory compliance.
  • Develops and maintains company protocols and standards for food safety as required by federal, state, and local regulatory agencies; conducts regular internal audits; works closely with Gleason Technology; takes action accordingly and informs company leadership as appropriate.
  • Records and analyzes statistical data, field inspection reports, and summary data; recommends modifications or suggests new standards, methods, and/or procedures to address concerns.
  • Performs analytical tests, inspections, and monitors incoming raw materials, packaging, and finished products for specification compliance; makes decisions concerning product quality.
  • Maintains an active and visible presence as a quality control agent on a companywide basis, working within each location.
  • Ensures companywide maintenance and sanitation programs and processes are in compliance with food safety requirements.
  • Provides companywide food safety guidance and training; collaborates with Operations and store department leadership to assess and minimize the risks involved with maintaining proper sanitation, including store design, supplier control, equipment maintenance, chemical management, and pest control.
  • Acts as point of contact for the Company during labor and industry compliance inspections due to employee complaint, serious injury, imminent danger situation, customer complaints, program, and referral or contract safety issues.
  • Oversees the maintenance of OSHA 300 logs for each location; ensures OSHA 300 records are updated regularly and logs are posted at the appropriate time.
  • Provides program development and maintenance for safety trainings, Safety Committee meetings, safety bulletin boards, and new team member safety orientations.
  • Creates and distributes team member safety communications, such as safety tips/newsletters, handouts, and fliers; monitors store safety bulletin boards to ensure required information is current and Safety Committee meeting minutes are posted.
  • Helps facilitate employee required safety training (e.g., Forklift, Global Harmonization, Ladders, Cuts, etc.) and team member safety training for leadership and supervisors.
  • Oversees contractor and vendor safety during construction projects.
  • Conducts store walkthroughs to identify hazardous conditions, regulatory infractions, team member concerns, and provides feedback/recommendations to managers.
  • Performs periodic review of Loss Control (LC) program elements and continuous improvement of process; annually reviews and updates the Written Accident Prevention Program and Emergency Preparedness and Injury Control Program (EPIC) to stay compliant with labor and industry rules and regulations.
  • Adheres to all local, state, and federal health and safety requirements.  Consistently demonstrates knowledge of HACCP and Department of Health provisions; shares knowledge with employees for the purpose of training.

Skills Required / Qualifications:
Candidates will be selected from applicants having the best combination of the following qualifications: 

  • 2-3 years of experience working in operational food safety, food service sanitation, or related experience.
  • Proven experience managing food safety compliance in a multi-site environment involving highly perishable foods.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of food safety and HACCP/Department of Health guidelines, gross profit, inventory and portion control, and labor percentages; proven experience working with each.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or HACCP certification, desired.
  • Possesses a working knowledge and experience in OSHA, WISHA, and Department of Health regulatory requirements; current knowledge of WAC 296-800: Safety and Health Core Rules, required.
  • Possesses an understanding of Washington State Workers’ Compensation insurance and claims processing; as well as a basic understanding of how experience rating affects company insurance rates within Washington state.
  • Thorough knowledge of record keeping requirements for injury reporting.
  • Proven experience developing, delivering, and evaluating safety training programs.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly in Outlook and Excel.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously and produce quality output while working within deadlines a must.  Sense of urgency required.  Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates a high level of self-motivation; takes initiative; problem solves.
  • Strong leadership skills; proven success as a team leader and member; proven history of personnel development.  Ability to effectively delegate and follow-through.
