Safety Specialist

Georgia-Pacific has an exciting opportunity for a talented safety professional at our Palatka, Florida facility. The Safety Specialist will report to the Safety Manager and has responsibility for assisting in development, implementation, and maintenance of the Company’s Health and Safety programs. Competing demands will require a strong process approach to work, strong organizational skills, teamwork and the ability to establish, communicate and adhere to priorities.

Located just south of Jacksonville and west of St. Augustine, FL, the Palatka mill employs about 950 people has three tissue paper machines as well as two Kraft/Linerboard Paper Machines and produces consumer tissue products such as bath tissue and paper towels sold under the Georgia-Pacific brand names of Angel Soft®, Quilted Northern®, Brawny®, and Sparkle®.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
* Facilitating Department Risk Assessments (DRAs) and Department Improvement Plan development
* Assisting in identifying improvement opportunities and implementing corrective actions in order to reduce risk by utilizing the Risk Management System (RMS) tool
* Assisting in the ongoing utilization of Hazard Identification Risk Assessments (HIRA) efforts which involves partnering with operations to lead hazard identification and risk assessment efforts and identifying/implementing corrective actions that appropriately reduce risk
* Assisting in the development and implementation of core safety programs such as Lockout, Confined Space, Safety Management Systems, Emergency Preparedness, Excavation and Trenching, Fall Protection, Incident Investigation, Mobile Equipment, Cranes and Rigging, Personal Protective Equipment, and Safe Work Permits
* Creating value for the mill through effective implementation of GP safety and health requirements and a thorough understanding of the mill’s safety & health vision
* Preparing and conducting required regulatory training and working with facility personnel to increase awareness of safety and health issues
* Performing ongoing evaluations/audits of safety and health programs facility wide
* Facilitating incident investigations to identify root causes and implementing corrective actions in order to prevent reoccurrence
* Responding to site personnel for assistance and support on safety and health-related issues
* Assisting with the development of strategic plans to achieve short and long-term safety and health improvement goals
* Supporting risk management and mitigation efforts for significant capital investment

What You Will Need:

Basic Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in Safety, a safety related field, or other technical field (i.e., Engineering) 
* Two (2) years or more of experience in a safety-related role in a heavy industrial environment or completion of the Georgia-Pacific ELP Program
* Experience using Risk Management concepts and tools 
* Experience developing regulatory compliance programs and training

What Will Put You Ahead?

Preferred Qualifications:
* Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent certification
* Five (5) years or more of safety related work experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting
* Safety experience in the pulp and paper industry
* Demonstrated ability to establish sustainable systems for compliance and continuous improvement
