Safety Representative

What we need from you:
The general responsibility of the Safety Representative is to support strategic safety initiatives including;  “Zero Injury” goal, continuous improvement, policy and process development, interpretation of regulatory standards and industry guidelines, development of safety management systems, risk assessment and risk management processes, training system development, workers’ compensation, process safety management system development, and safety leadership development. The Safety Representative reports to the Mill Manager and works closely with the Occupational Health Nurse, a Safety Coordinator, and various other departments throughout the Mill. 

What you get to do: 

  • Develop and implement effective safety policies, procedures and work processes to improve overall facility safety performance and reduce risk in line with “zero injury goal” culture.
  • Assist in administration of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ASME etc… type standards with the ability to assist the facility and operational departments through enhancement of existing policies and procedures.
  • Understand leading and trailing indicators (metrics) and has the ability to select the proper indicators to obtain results.
  • Develop risk assessment and risk management strategies that drive results towards zero injuries.
  • Understand and can utilize, auditing techniques, observation techniques, investigation techniques, root cause analysis techniques, and corrective action processes.
  • Deliver and execute high value safety projects on time and within budget.
  • Lead and conduct meetings, problem solving sessions, incident investigations, and safety training sessions.
  • Partner with onsite Nurse to assist in the resolution of issues arising from workers’ compensation cases.
  • Possess strong organization skills including during challenging multi-project conditions while supporting a wide range of safety process improvement initiatives.
  • Actively monitor and interact with employee’s to promote safe performance outcomes.
  • Provide support to the emergency action team, process safety management team, and security personnel.

What we are looking for: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety discipline or related field.
  • 3 – 10 year’s safety related experience in manufacturing/production environment. Heavy manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Proficient in MS Office products and be able to learn and develop web based applications.
  • Must have effective interpersonal, communications and presentation skills in small or large settings with all levels of the organization; management and hourly personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety compliance standards (OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, etc.).
  • Proven ability to lead, guide and mentor others.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to positively influence others in order to drive and achieve results
  • Industrial Hygiene experience preferred
  • Prior experience in paper industry and in a union environment preferred
