Safety Outreach Manager

The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. (ISRI) is the "Voice of the Recycling Industry."  ISRI represents more than 1,700 companies in 21 chapters nationwide that process, broker, and consume scrap commodities, including metals, paper, plastics, glass, rubber, electronics, and textiles.  With headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Institute provides education, advocacy, safety and compliance training, and promotes public awareness of the vital role recycling plays in the U.S. economy, global trade, the environment and sustainable development.  For more information about ISRI, please visit www.isri.org.

General Summary:
The Safety Outreach Manager is part of the ISRI safety team and provides technical expertise and input in all of the ISRI Safety programs.  The Safety Outreach manager develops safety and health programs and tools for the use of the membership. The Manager also interacts with members of ISRI staff (safety and other departments) to provide information to concerning issues that he/she becomes aware of and serves as an ambassador of the Association when interacting with membership. The Manager also advises the Vice President of Safety on safety compliance concerns and or activities both verbally and in written reports.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions:

  • Performs safety assessments and training classes as needed and scheduled (20% travel)
  • Coordinates ISRI Recommended Best Practices (RISP) development and review with member companies
  • Conduct or facilitate sessions during ISRI’s annual Convention.
  • Conducts and/or facilitates workshops and sessions during ISRI events including the ISRI Safety and Environmental Council Conference, Chapter meetings or other events as needed.
  • Provides safety technical assistance to members as needed. Communicates that information to ISRI staff.
  • Review and provide written updates to changes in safety and health regulatory information.

Develops, evaluates and upgrades ISRI safety and health programs and resources based on an agreed upon schedule.  These include:

  • Operating Safety procedures
  • Equipment Safety procedures
  • Weekly Safety Tips/Messages
  • Safety training presentations
  • Safety Webinars
  • Other safety outreach tools (compliance checklists, fact sheets etc.)

Job Specifications:

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of safety and health regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledgeable with the principles of  safety systems and safety culture
  • Effective writing and verbal communications skills. 
  • Ability to develop and provide training presentations
  • Ability to remain current and research safety and health regulatory information
  • Strategic thinking and leadership skills

Qualifications and Education Requirements:

  • BS Degree from an accredited college or university. 
  • 8-10 years of progressive field safety experience
  • Proficient computer skills with basic software programs (Excel, Word, Office, and PowerPoint)
  • Industrial Hygiene experience a plus

Preferred Education/Skills:

  • Professional certification in safety and/or health discipline
