Safety Manager

Reporting to the VP of Safety and Health, the Safety Manager will influence and optimize health and safety regulatory compliance and program performance for a growing domestic and international enterprise, including multiple facilities currently throughout the US, Canada and the UK. 

In this role, you will review and provide impactful instruction and leadership related to quarterly facility improvement plans for enterprise organization, in conjunction with Corporate and Regional Safety personnel and the field operations teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Goals and focus on reduction of accidents and commitment to an injury free workplace, management of industrial hygiene monitoring programs and related medical surveillance protocols and programs, implementation of regulatory/Corporate programs and enterprise-wide safety program improvements.
  • Develop new corporate programs and conduct annual facility audits outside the assigned region including implementation of the Covanta STEP-UP Program.
  • Foster the success of innovative safety management systems through strong relationships throughout the enterprise with the various leadership teams while identifying safety deficiencies and offering means for cost effective corrective action.
  • Develop and teach training courses in the field of safety management as needed;
  • Coordinate/ track medical surveillance program and lead exposures;
  • Researching special topics/equipment needs;
  • Outage planning and oversight/participation;
  • Industrial hygiene sampling, analysis and reporting data base tracking; accident investigation;
  • Fit testing;
  • JSA hazard identification;
  • Ergonomics evaluations and design changes;
  • Hazard control evaluation;
  • Program evaluation;
  • Active communication;
  • Evaluation of PPE selection;
  • Near miss reporting.

Our Green Hard Hat program requires new employees to, literally, wear green hard hats so that they are easily identifiable to fellow employees who can provide guidance as to safe behaviors and protocols. All employees are empowered to take ownership of their own personal safety, as well as that of their peers. 

Safety Excellence Programs and External Recognition:

  • The majority of our domestic facilities participate in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
  • Under VPP, management, labor and OSHA work together, establishing cooperative relationships at workplaces to implement comprehensive safety and health management systems.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor in Occupational Health & Safety or similar degree in science, engineering, industrial hygiene
  • Exceptional candidates without a Bachelor's degree may also be considered
  • Graduate degree preferred


  • Minimum of eight (8) years experience in the ‘health and safety.
  • Experience with OSHA, ANSI, ASME, NFPA and DOT regulations and requirements

Certifications preferred: CSP, CIH and/ or ARM

Willing and able to travel as needed, current estimates are about 50-60% 

Skills & Knowledge: 

  • Word processing, database, spreadsheet and PowerPoint skills
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, ASME, NFPA and DOT regulations and requirements
  • Excellent statistical and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement techniques, evaluation of process and methods for improvement, methods for minimizing Human Error through assessment of Risk Priorities
  • Passionate about innovation and behavioral change
  • Authority on safety management systems and organizational development/optimization
  • Ability to target process priorities and to manage multiple projects simultaneously
