Safety Manager

This position is responsible for leading improvements in all functional areas of safety across the entire facility and for taking full ownership and initiative in leading culture change to a proactive mindset. This position also acts as first point of contact in the facility regarding human resource related questions and concerns. 

Typical Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the development of the Safety and Injury Prevention Programs.
  • Develops, leads, implements, and documents safety program elements and monitors their effectiveness. Take initiative to make changes as necessary.
  • Performs routine safety audits; identifies and reports on areas needing attention or intervention and works with plant leaders to develop solutions.
  • Monitors adherence to federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including State and Federal OSHA safety standards.
  • Develops and implements environmental compliance program to ensure facility meets all environmental requirements and regulations.
  • Maintains, tracks and monitors all incidents trending data looking for opportunities and reducing highest risk through data drive decisions. Maintains and generates OSHA 300 logs. Benchmarks current programs against the Bureau of Labor Standards to develop ways to decrease accident trends for severity, frequency and time loss.
  • Prepares and disseminates weekly work injury reports to assist supervisors and work groups in the elimination or reduction of work injuries.
  • Communicates regularly with managers, supervisors and leads and acts as a resource to ensure safety goals are met.
  • Implements risk assessment process to rate and measure risk for all tasks.
  • Leads, designs, and owns continual process improvements for safety.
  • Develop and lead safety committee into advocates for safety that lead change, implement new programs and capability builders for knowledge/emergency response.
  • Works with Workers’ Compensation insurer and managers to seek improvements in workstation design to prevent injury.
  • Develops a process that ensures timely follow-up and completion of issues identified from incidents and proactive reporting. 
  • Develops and conducts employee and supervisor training related to safety programs and compliance.
  • Leads all safety training to ensure transfer of knowledge from HR, AQ, Production and Warehouse departments to all employees.
  • Conducts needs assessments and collaborates with plant leadership to develop and deliver training that reduces risk of injury and accident.
  • Leads training with managers on how to perform root cause analysis with incident investigations.
  • Assists with the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for employee job training. Manages SOP document control activities and the employee training database.
  • Communicates regularly with line staff employees in a training capacity regarding safety and environmental issues.
  • Delivers and tracks all compliance-related training to managers and line staff.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Industrial Health, or related area. Additional environmental/safety certifications are a plus.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years or related experience, preferably in high-speed manufacturing and warehousing.

Essential Skills/Knowledge:

  • Must have a comprehensive working knowledge of Workers Compensation administration, including fit-for-duty and return to work implementation, as well as OSHA and or State rules and regulations.
  • Must possess intermediate skills with Microsoft Office Suite and have excellent written and presentation skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communications; effective interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and lead others.
  • Results oriented; ability to prioritize rapidly and strong problem solving skills; excellent decision making/analysis skills; ability to build relationships effectively.

Travel and Physical Demands:
Travel between local sites will be required.  Overnight travel of up to 20% may be expected.
