Safety Manager

Shimadzu Scientific Instruments is one of the largest suppliers of analytical instrumentation, physical testing, and environmental monitoring systems in the world. In 1975, SSI Corporate Headquarters was established in Columbia, Maryland and we currently have ten regional offices coast to coast.


The individual in this position under general supervision is responsible for improving, monitoring and coordinating the safety program/protocols at Shimadzu.  This includes routine random safety inspections, accident investigations and safety training.  Will assist with designing policies & procedures that help prevent harm to workers and property.

This position is to act as the safety Officer in all safety measures and actions. The incumbent may be called upon to complete other tasks and duties as assigned.  This role will be required to be the back-up Radiation Safety Officer, until the program is moved to the Safety Manager permanently.


  • Participates in the development and implementation of a company-wide comprehensive safety program. (Monthly)
  • Ensure company compliance to all OSHA, MSDS & Governmental safety compliance requirements/programs. Prevent government fines and respond to questionnaire inquiries. (Monthly)
  • Conducts routine audits and follows up on safety and hazard inspections of company facilities/labs. (Monthly)
  • Responds to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, chemical spills, radiation, fire, smoke and similar incidents. Prepares findings and submits recommendations to the Safety Officer. (Monthly)
  • Analyzes accident and incident reports for trends and makes recommendations for correcting unsafe conditions. (Monthly)
  • Assist Manager in the development and implementation of safety procedures and protocols. (Weekly)
  • Ensure that training labs are kept in safe working conditions/order. (Monthly)
  • Responsible for keeping PPE cabinet/closet stocked. (Weekly)
  • Test and monitor air quality with Facilities. (Quarterly)
  • Investigate and respond to safety complaints. (Weekly)
  • Chair the Safety Committee at the Corporate offices. (Quarterly)
  • Create & facilitate all Safety Training and keep records for compliance. (Weekly)
  • Monitor and respond to employee safety violations. Report to appropriate parties. (Weekly)
  • Assist Safety Officer with chemical storage inventory and hazardous waste disposal program. (Weekly)
  • Know, understand and follow company policy. (daily)
  • Coordinate safety events like AED, First Aid, CPR, Fire Extinguisher Use, proper lifting… (quarterly)
  • Must be able to travel by air and car to all ten regional offices and BSL2 labs as needed. (monthly)


This position’s focus is act as the Safety Officer with company-wide safety procedures and actions. Incumbent will assist with development, implementation and monitoring of all safety protocols. This person will create, implement, monitor and enforce all safety procedures, report violations and investigate accidents/incidents.

Incumbent must be proficient in monitoring, documenting and enforcing safety standards. Must have to follow policy and procedures, and when needed, make independent decisions based on company protocol/policies. A self-starter, highly motivated and exceptional problem-solving skills. 


Incumbent must have a Bachelors’ Degree with at least four years professional safety experience and at least one year of managerial experience. A proven track record of providing administrative and organizational/recordkeeping, accident investigative skills, leadership abilities to enforce policies, as well as, being detailed oriented. Dependable work ethic and ability to keep material confidential is required.  Must be able to promote a culture of safety and manage any push-back and negativity towards following safety protocols and/or rules.  


This position will supervise the Safety Specialist.
