Safety Manager

Position Summary:
The role of the Safety Manager for P. Flanigan & Sons, Baltimore, MD, is to plan and implement the company safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment.   


  • Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state and federal OSHA rules and regulations; ensure OSHA reports/documentation is complete and submitted as required.
  • Plan and implement company-wide safety programs to train managers and employees in plant and job site safety practices; conduct new employee safety orientation weekly or as directed.
  • Perform job site safety surveys and inspections, document findings, discuss recommendations and corrective actions with field and plant personnel.
  • Compose, review or modify site specific safety plans as required.
  • Ensure proper job site safety setup for all new projects; make certain all items necessary are in place prior to the start of the project (regulatory display information, SDS, safety-related equipment).
  • Conduct investigation of accidents and injuries; prepare quarterly report for senior leadership identifying root cause and corrective measures; coordinate the preparation of material/evidence for company use in hearings, lawsuits and insurance investigations.
  • Collect, review and evaluate Job Hazard Analyses submitted from field personnel; provide guidance and feedback as necessary.
  • Ensure health testing, air monitoring, noise monitoring and hazard risk assessments are conducted.
  • Review subcontractor safety performance; ensure insurance policies for subcontractors and hired truckers are current and meet required limits.


  • Bachelors’ degree in safety science or related degree from four-year college/university required.
  • Professional safety related certification (CSP, CHST, CSHM, ASHM) preferred.
  • Three years’ experience in general construction, preferably in civil infrastructure and heavy highway construction.
  • Must be an effective trainer, communicator and coach for employees, supervisors and management personnel.
  • Solid understanding of occupational health and safety principles and practices including regulatory compliance. This includes self-directed maintenance on knowledge of current laws, events, industry trends and economic factors.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in conducting root cause analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, develop and deliver successful presentations to groups at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to benchmark, measure, analyze and articulate the value of safety initiatives, practices and policies.
  • Ability to deal with confidential information, complex situations and personnel matters.
  • Must be proficient with computers and related technology (Microsoft Office Suite applications).
  • Must be willing to work weekends and nights as required.
