Safety Engineer

Hexcel is currently seeking a Safety Engineer for our Kent, WA USA location.  The Safety Engineer will be responsible for developing and implementing a variety of health and safety programs to ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all employees.  The Safety Engineer will assist the EHS department in managing all health and safety standards, growing the safety culture, and preventing injury to employees along with preventing damage to property and equipment. 

 

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:

  • Develop and implement programs and procedures to ensure compliance with all applicable safety and health regulations, local, and corporate health and safety management systems (HSMS).
  • Maintain the site Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and all Hexcel health and safety standards (LOTO, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Mobile Equipment, Cranes, Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, Behavioral Based Safety, Emergency Planning, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain annual site improvement plan.
  • Support EHS efforts, as directed by the EHS Manager, to ensure sustainable continuous improvement in this key business function.
  • Assist the EHS Manager as an internal resource on regulatory and safety policy issues and develop procedures for compliance as required.  Conduct periodic reviews of the plant’s APP and OSHA compliance, and provide feedback to the EHS Manager and plant management.
  • Provide timely resolutions of safety problems by defining the problem, determining root cause, establishing action plans and priorities, organizing any necessary procurement, repair and/or providing technical assistance.
  • Establish positive working relationships with employees and supervisors.
  • Assist facilitators in the development and maintenance of accurate job hazard analyses (JHA) for all processes.
  • Prescribe elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative or PPE controls to eliminate hazards and reduce exposures when hazards cannot be eliminated.  Make recommendations for hazard controls based on comprehensive analysis.
  • Compile, review, analyze and interpret incident data.  Assist facilitators and management in the investigation of incidents to determine root causes and corrective actions.  Assist facilitators, as needed, with corrective actions.
  • Participate in the design and pre-start-up review of new and modified equipment, prior to release to operations personnel to assure safe operation, PHA, HAZOP, LOPA, etc.
  • Manage the safety training program by updating the course content as required, establishing effective delivery and testing methods for determining understanding.  Actively support and interact in monthly and/or plant refresher safety training using available resources. 
  • Support the site Occupational Health Nurse in the management of the medical surveillance programs; e.g., hearing conservation, respirator protection programs, and the ergonomics program.
  • Support the Environmental Engineer in the management of the industrial hygiene program and HAZCOM program in compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Support the maintenance of the emergency contingency plan and participate in plant emergency preparedness activities as a general emergency coordinator.  Conduct periodic drills of the emergency contingency plan and assess for effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.
  • Lead the site safety committee, BBS committee, and the emergency coordinator committee.
  • Participate in periodic hands-on safety audits of manufacturing work areas with Plant management and Facilitators.  Assist in resolution of identified issues.
  • Establish and support methods of communicating safety information to employees and promoting involvement in prevention activities.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage time to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Comply with Hexcel policies, procedures, and Code of Business Conduct.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably Safety/Environmental Engineering or related technical field, from four-year college or university.
  • 5+ years of related experience; experience in an aerospace manufacturing company or industrial setting preferred.  Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be knowledgeable of county, state and federal laws and regulations governing and/or affecting general industry, including, but not limited to, OSHA and WA-DOSH.
  • Must possess strong technical and oral/written communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or related software.
