Safety Director


Position Summary: 

Plans, directs and implements the Company safety program to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment company-wide

Expected Outcomes:

  • Safety goals are achieved on every project
  • No accidents or near hits
  • No OSHA citations
  • Employees are well educated in safe work practices and have all resources necessary to work safely
  • All governmental safety regulations are observed and practiced
  • Weekly visits or phone contact with all projects
  • Analyzes and recommends corrective action for all accidents
  • Communications with Company President are frequent and effective

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Attends monthly CEA Safety Council meetings
  • Processes inventory chargebacks to the Controller following the close of each quarter
  • Prepares for the CORE Team Meeting (2nd Monday of every month) - creates agenda, reviews safest job award spreadsheet, reviews safety statistics/DART sheet and reviews weekly safety documentation log
  • Participates in pre-construction and hand-off meetings
  • Emails safety report update to all employees every Monday
  • Creates and monitors department budget; approves invoices in Viewpoint
  • Prepares reports for President and Division Managers for every recordable injury, near-hit, first-aid, and other reports as requested
  • Ensures safety-related policies and procedures are understood and implemented consistently throughout the Company
  • Works with the Director of Human Resources on all personnel-related matters
  • Maintains safety files and records
  • Recommends and enforces disciplinary actions against safety policy violators
  • Reviews job site electrical hazards for proper markings and protections to the greatest extent possible
  • Communicates and reinforces Company values and mission to department staff
  • Performs additional assignments as directed by the President or Division Manager


  • Meets with Company President the first Monday of every month to discuss recent issues, injuries, goals and strategy
  • Develops and implements company-wide safety objectives and strategies that compliment Company culture and it’s values and mission

Policy Administration and Enforcement:

  • Conducts comprehensive on-site safety assessments of projects as part of a constant monitoring process; takes corrective action as needed and/or works with project management to ensure proper corrective action is taken when needed
  • Develops and maintains documentation for the Safety Manual, Field Labor Handbook, Vehicle and Equipment Operations Policy, Emergency Management Plan, Substance Abuse Policy and other policies as needed
  • Develops and administers the Company’s Substance Abuse Policy; establishes testing programs and identifies providers; monitors the testing program to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations; provides information on rehabilitation assistance to employees


  • Ensure company compliance with all federal, state and local safety regulations
  • Represents the Company in all safety related hearings (OSHA, etc.)
  • Prepares all required regulatory reports and ensures they are submitted timely
  • Completes necessary updates and reports for the Ohio BWC
  • Logs all near hits, first aids and recordable incidents in Keller Online to track and produce the OSHA 300 Log

Training and Development:

  • Ensures jobsite Superintendent/Project Manager completes a Safety Flash for any significant event. Safety Flash is then sent out company-wide via email by a safety staff member
  • Plans and implements project-specific and corporate-wide training programs
  • Distributes Tool Box Talks and recent safety news to all employees via email by the first Monday of each month
  • Provides posters, personal protective equipment, etc. to projects
  • Reviews accident and incident documentation to insure all required records and reports are complete and accurate; ensures corrective action is implemented
  • Participates in the investigation of all accidents resulting in lost time injuries or major property, liability or      equipment damage; produces investigative reports
  • Develops and continually improves the effectiveness of the department’s procedures
  • Evaluates the performance of department staff
  • Provides professional development advice and direction to department staff
  • Develops and implements safety emergency plan drills for the Sharon Center office

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in occupational safety/health or equivalent combinations of training and related experience
  • At least 10 years construction safety experience
  • OSHA30 and/or OSHA500 certification
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local, and Company regulations
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to train and educate others
  • Good computer skills
