Under the direction of the Regional Manager & Division Safety Manager, the Safety Coordinator performs inspections, audits, recordkeeping, and assists the Safety Manager in the administration of the company’s safety and health management policies and programs.

The ability to work independently, coordinate a variety of tasks and activities, communicate with others, prepare comprehensive reports, speak and write effectively, assimilate and understand information, and make sound decisions consistent with company policies and procedures is required. Working knowledge of safety/health regulations and laws administered by OSHA, MSHA, USDOT, US EPA, and state/local agencies is necessary.

The Safety Coordinator’s duties require familiarity with safety prevention and countermeasure plans and emergency planning. Safety responsibilities require familiarity with federal and state regulations covering hazardous chemical communication programs (GHS HAZCOM), confined space entry, personal protective equipment, lockout tagout, electrical safety, fire prevention, machine guarding, materials handling and storage, excavation, ladders and stairways, welding and cutting, and work zone safety. 

  • Assist in development and planning of annual 16-hr Safety and Human Resources training for the Region.
  • Coordinate or conduct new hire safety onboarding for manufacturing or construction personnel per MSHA/OSHA/USDOT guidelines and company initiatives.
  • Maintain Goal Zero program, daily huddles, one-on-ones, close calls, peer guide program etc.
  • Develop topics and coordinate a curriculum for weekly Toolbox Talks.
  • Assist in annual safety/environmental program review.
  • Perform root cause incident investigations.
  • Coordinate job safety analysis (JSA) program.
  • Perform periodic compliance inspections at operating locations and jobsites. (Site Audits)
  • Assist in preparation of quarterly risk management reports.
  • Assist Supt’s and Mgrs. with recordkeeping responsibilities under various permits and regulations.
  • Manage General Liability Auto Claims and WC Claims with Human Resources.
  • Manage NY Driver files (LENS system).
  • Oversee Sub-Contract Trucker Insurance requirements.
  • Lead Monthly Safety Committee meetings.
  • Assist in Continuous Process Improvement Projects for the region.
  • Assist Environmental Coordinator with any issues and or questions.
  • Assist Manufacturing Supts with writing machine specific LOTO procedures.
  • Participate in Colas safety initiatives and implement them in the region.
  • Accompany inspector’s onsite (OSHA/MSHA).
  • Maintain Intelex Risk Management Database.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Safety Coordinator has delegated authority from the Division Safety Manager for enforcing policy and managing environmental, safety and health activities. This position has no direct authority over other employees under normal circumstances except during training activities and/or during investigations associated with incidents or complaints. However, in situations where a recognized safety hazard exists, or if a compliance violation is observed, the Safety Coordinator has the authority to stop work and/or require that the offending individual(s) be removed from the workplace immediately.

Possession of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and at least two years’ experience in the administration of safety functions corresponding to this position is preferred. 

Must be able to understand and communicate safety and health regulations. Display an aptitude for problem solving where compliance violations are found. Be able to provide instruction and training to company employees including but not limited to Chemical Hazard Communications, lockout tagout, PPE, firefighting, and Silica prevention. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with the company’s Motor Vehicle Policy.

Office work, site work, and some limited travel may be necessary. Outdoor work at mining, manufacturing and construction locations may require wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on conditions. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
