Safety & Compliance Manager

We are looking for a proven leader in safety to join our team and help us take our safety performance to the next level. 

Our client has an opening for a Safety and Compliance Manager (SCM) who will be responsible for multiple sites in the Washington D.C. area. The SCM must have experience working within the field of fleet safety and operational safety. The primary responsibilities include training, job observations, accident prevention, loss control, audits and regulatory compliance. The SCM must be able to produce results through effective safety and health program and process development and implementation.

The SCM must be able to drive safe performance practices while working with CDL Drivers, Heavy Equipment Operators, Manager/Supervisors and Maintenance Personnel. The SCM have baseline knowledge pertaining to insurance claims processing and be able to work and respond to claims representatives and adjusters regarding company coverage and claims reporting. Incumbent must be able to work and communicate throughout all levels of the organization. Waste industry experience is preferred but not required expeciially waste collecctoin, transfer stations and materials recovery (i.e., recycling).

  • Must have working general knowledge of rules, regulations and standards set by the DOT, OSHA and ANSI.
  • Must have working knowledge of safety and health management systems and continuous improvement.
  • Must have working knowledge of basic insurance and risk management requirements following accidents and injuries.
  • Must have working knowledge of waste industry equipment and mechanics to include heavy equipment (i.e., dump trucks, roll-off trucks and containers, front end loader vehicles, tractor trailers, other heavy equipment to include yellow iron).
  • Must be an effective trainer, communicator and coach for employees, supervisors and management personnel.
  • Must be proficient with computers and related technology as well as typical business software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Professional safety related certification preferred but not required (e.g., CRM, CSP, CIH)
  • Minimum 5 years experience in the safety compliance and insurance field
  • Effectively communicate (written and verbal) to all levels of the organization as required
  • Flexible work schedule if and as needed
  • Attention to detail, ingenuity, teamwork, and passion to exceed the goals of the company
  • Ability to deal with problems involving confidentiality and complex situations and personnel
  • Must be fit-for-duty and able to drive to multiple locations throughout his/her tour-of-duty
  • Some overnight travel required (5%)
