Regional Employee Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

The Regional Employee Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for administering the EH&S program that provides a safe, healthy working environment for all employees and the environment.  We are currently seeking a EH&S Specialist for our Pleasanton and San Leandro facilities.  This role is expected to be onsite at both locations weekly. 

This role monitors all areas for unsafe conditions, acts, and potential hazards. Enforces environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures.  Maintains regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal laws.  Makes safety and health recommendations to management in conjunction with the facility safety committee. Develops the facility Integrated Contingency Plan and coordinates the facility’s Emergency Response Team. Monitors the facilities for unsafe conditions or acts to stay in compliance with the Chemical Hygiene Plan, EH&S Procedures, and company policies.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ensures the proper personal protective equipment is available and personnel are properly trained in its use.
  • Investigates accidents, incidents, and near misses and identifies and eliminates root cause.
  • Conducts monthly facility inspections for compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures.
  • Completes and forwards monthly inspection report to safety committee and laboratory management for corrective actions.
  • Conducts safety equipment checks to ensure proper working order and sufficient inventory.
  • Plans and tracks completion of monthly general awareness training sessions and compliance training, including new employee EH&S orientation.
  • Coordinates emergency response team to provide prompt medical attention and stabilize emergency situation.
  • Conducts the monthly EH&S committee meeting.
  • Reviews and maintains MSDS’s for facilities.
  • Coordinates the management and disposal of facility wastes.
  • Reviews and approves safety practices in SOP’s.
  • Prepares and maintains facility Integrated Contingency Plan.
  • Monitors air quality in facility, including monitoring fume hoods for proper operation and ventilation.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Associates degree in Industrial hygiene, safety, chemistry or related field or; 3 - 5 years of related experience in a manufacturing/distribution/laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Licensure/Certificate/Registration: First Aid responder, 40 hours HazWOper certification, CIH, DOT, IATA certification, Train-the-Trainer. Laboratory will provide certification within 6 months of date of hire.

 Specific Knowledge and Skills:

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Strong problem solving / Root Cause Analysis skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate throughout the organization and externally in written and spoken form.
  • Knowledge of state insurance and safety laws and regulations. Ability to comprehend technical material.
