Regional Director, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS)

The Regional Director, EHS will provide leadership and oversight for EHS functional activities and the performance of multiple Manufacturing and Recycling Operations and Distribution Centers within the Americas Region, establishing strong working relationships with business and functional leaders and plant locations. The Regional Director, EHS directs EHS programs and activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and company policies. The Regional Director, EHS reports directly to the VP EHS.


  • Implements EHS standards, provides technical assistance on EHS issues, and partners with the business on compliance, project management, and EHS management issues.
  • Supports the EHS AOP, STRAP, and Corporate governance processes including, the Assurance Letter, compliance initiatives, governmental reporting, and best practice exchanges.
  • Participates in the development of corporate initiatives, and directs America’s deployment of management systems including leadership standards, risk assessment, and risk management processes. Also directs the Americas initiative to achieve external EHS certifications.
  • Is responsible for Operations and Distribution Center EHS Leader development and provides input to the employee development process for the Region. Partners with business and site leaders to integrate the culture of EHS ownership, performance and compliance.
  • Provides assistance and leads as required, EHS due diligence reviews for acquisitions, mergers, divestitures and globalization activities. Develops and implements EHS integration plans for new facilities and businesses.
  • Measures key metrics that drive the effectiveness of EHS activities across the Region.
  • Deploys safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental processes which demonstrate continuous improvement in EHS stewardship directed toward preventing accidents, eliminating safety hazards, waste minimization and pollution prevention.
  • Leads continuous improvement efforts to enhance facilities operations and reduce operating costs.
  • Requires integration of management systems and standards into multiple sites and the application of knowledge to a changing/fast moving environment.
  • Establishes goals, objectives, metrics and scorecards to assure integration and consistent deployment of standards and systems within the Region.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with all internal customers and identifies current state of EHS performance, risks, issues, and needs. Develops EHS strategy to fill compliance and performance gaps in support of the business strategic plan.
  • Deploys the Exide EHS Management System.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Fifteen or more years of experience managing EHS requirements in a multi-site manufacturing environment.
  • Must be thoroughly knowledgeable and conversant in the applicable EHS disciplines, sciences and regulations.
  • B.S. degree in engineering, manufacturing, safety, environmental science, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional certification desired (CSP, CIH, CHMM, PE).
  • Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt/Lean Expert certification desirable.

  • Highly motivated and self-directed, with strong influencing and leadership skills.
  • Must have exceptional skills in building strong professional relationships and networks to drive EHS programs and performance. Critical competencies include cross cultural ability and understanding, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to articulate and drive strategic ideas and issues to senior management.
  • Broad knowledge of governmental health, safety, and environmental regulations and requirements (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) and emerging global requirements
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading teams, developing strong partnerships with businesses, and developing people.
  • Must be customer focused, and be a strategic thinker. Must have the ability to lead change and have strong consultative/influencing skills.
  • Record of progressive experience in managing EHS programs at multiple locations.
  • Must possess business/financial acumen, be customer oriented, and a strategic thinker to focus EHS resources on meeting critical business needs.
