Process Safety Manager

Georgia-Pacific’s facility in Monticello, MS is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as Process Safety Manager. If you aspire to drive innovation and continuous improvement while leading a team to process safety and compliance excellence, we are interested in learning more about you! This role provides process safety leadership and direction to facility through the application of Georgia-Pacific’s Market Based Management® (MBM®) Framework and Guiding Principles.  

Process Safety Managers create value by ensuring risk is aggressively identified and mitigated, strategies are consistent with company process safety and S&H visions, and sustainable management systems are developed and implemented. As a Process Safety Manager at GP, you will collaborate with the leadership and the facility team by identifying methods to assure that the elements of process safety are integrated into the mill culture. You will serve as a mentor for mill leadership and all employees to develop knowledge and appreciation for the value creation associated with a process safety approach to managing operations.

Georgia Pacific’s paper mill in Monticello, MS has been in operation since 1968 and employs 450 employees.  The Monticello mill has the capability to produce over 1,000,000 tons of containerboard each year. Our facility prides itself on the safe, environmentally sustainable, and compliant operation of a gas fired boiler, two recovery boilers, combination fuel boiler, evaporators, liquor cycle, two electrical power generation turbines, as well as a variety of water and air utility systems. Our facility is located in central Mississippi about 65 miles from Hattiesburg, MS and is 1 hour from the capital city of Jackson, MS.

This position reports to the Safety & Health Leader.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:

  • Provides guidance, using strong verbal and written communication skills as a subject matter expert on process safety standards, risk assessment methodologies, and safety management systems.
  • Assists facility leadership with the review and validation of operating procedures, the design and specification of process equipment and pressure safety devices, and have engineering capability responsibility for process hazard analyses (PHA), management of change (MOC), pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), and HAZOP's. 
  • The candidate will lead plant process incident investigations and develop effective corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide analysis of process safety incident investigations in order to assure that sustainable long-term corrective actions are implemented.
  • Maintain all process safety information including: P&ID's, PFD's, chemical compatibility matrix, etc.
  • Leads problem-solving teams in a plant manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities to achieve goals.
  • Provides leadership and direction to achieve the process safety vision through management commitment and employee ownership.
  • Provides routine communication to mill management regarding process safety plans and issues impacting the mill.
  • Provides guidance and oversight for the mill’s PS program in keeping with Georgia-Pacific Standards.
  • Develops methods to monitor process safety trends and develops plans for continual performance improvement.
  • Facilitates process safety ownership by the line organization through the integration of the S&H Management System.
  • Leads and/or facilitates ongoing risk assessments and PHA’s in order to anticipate, identify and evaluate hazards.
  • Assists mill leadership with the development of short and long-term process safety objectives, targets, strategies, and measures that prioritize initiatives and mitigate risks.
  • Ensures the development, improvement, and implementation of training systems to meet facility needs and to grow process safety skills and knowledge across the organization.
  • Monitors and assures process safety compliance.


What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or other technical or engineering field.
  • Three (3) or more years manufacturing / process safety experience.
  • Experience and working knowledge of Process Safety regulations, specifically 29 CFR 1910.119 and 40 CFR 68.
  • Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) leadership experience
     

What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience within a chemical, petrochemical, or pulp/paper mill in operations, technical, or mechanical integrity role
  • ASP, GSP, CSP, CIH or equivalent certification
  • Experience in the pulp & paper industry
