Department Overview

Nothing is more important to us than public, employee, and contractor safety and health.  The Enterprise Health & Safety organization is a dedicated team of safety and health professionals, focused on preventing illness and injuries through a wide scope of work.  We partner with all lines of business to develop and integrate enterprise-wide innovative and proactive safety and health solutions while ensuring regulatory compliance and reducing risk through programs such as the Corrective Action Program.

The Critical Safety Risk organization is responsible for leading PG&E’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries by creating, implementing, and driving best-in-class risk management solutions, tools, practices, and systems. This includes managing the Enterprise Safety Management System (ESMS) and overseeing critical safety risks and lifesaving programs such as the Contractor Safety Program, hazardous energies, confined space, and fall protection.

This position will report to the Critical Safety Risk Director.

The location of this position is flexible and may be required to travel up to 30% of the time within the service territory.  

Position Summary

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a comprehensive Contractor Safety Program for PG&E. This will require strategic partnership and collaboration with the various lines of business, particularly Electric Operations, Gas Operations, and Generation. It will be expected to identify external regulatory requirements related to safety, as well as internal policies and standards, and ensure that programs, strategies, and controls are in place to ensure compliance. It is also essential to work closely with other leaders in the Enterprise Health & Safety organization and key representatives from the lines of business, to effectively integrate contractor safety and ensure consistent alignment with the Utility goals and objectives. 

This position will also provide direction and updates to officers and directors concerning matters related to system-wide contractor safety programs and initiatives, develop performance metrics, targets and reports to measure the performance of the Contractor Safety Program, and will benchmark with other companies to identify best practices that can be applied at PG&E.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manages and provides governance to PG&E’s Contractor Safety Program
  • Develops and implements tools and practices, including leading coordination and facilitating of program implementation with leaders and/or functional groups
  • Leads the development of program goals and metrics to meet company goals and objectives. Collaborates across the organization to ensure alignment of goals to support the Contractor Safety Program.
  • Collaborates with business groups by driving the development of the Contractor Safety Program, including standards, guidance and procedures development and implementation
  • Manages outside service vendors or others as required to support the Contractor Safety Program
  • Work and interact with outside regulatory agencies in the development and /or interpretation of new regulatory requirements
  • Recognized subject matter expert who represents PG&E in regulatory and/or industry forums on the subject of expertise
  • May manage major cross-functional projects and initiatives
  • Coaches and mentors less experienced employees
  • Solves unique and complex problems, anticipating issues and developing innovative solutions
  • Demonstrates strategic leadership with internal stakeholders to support Company goals
  • Responsible for utilizing other departments and teams to meet Contractor Safety Program goals
  • Organize and lead cross-utility project teams to influence utility, regulatory, and/or industry decisions.




  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
  • 9 years of related safety and program/management experience in a construction or utility environment.


  • At least four years of experience managing contractor safety programs
  • Utility experience
  • Demonstrated exceptional communication, change management, and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management.
  • Experience benchmarking best practices and processes within other companies/industries.
  • Progressive and significant experience in a safety professional role, in a high-risk industry
  • Progressive and significant experience in engineering, operations, maintenance, or construction.
  • Advanced knowledge of development and management of work methods and procedures, safety procedures, and organizational safety-related processes and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of CalOSHA, general industry and construction safety orders and other recognized safety regulations and standards (e.g., ANSI, ASTM, NFPA, NEC, FedOSHA, etc.)
  • Ability to think and work independently using a wide range of resources.
  • Knowledge of incident investigation analysis and corrective action plan development/management.
  • CSP - Certified Safety Professional certification.
  • CHST – Construction Health and Safety Technician certification.
  • Strong people skills, capable meeting facilitator, able to communicate with hourly workers and executives

  • Able to work under pressure, multi-task, and meet tight deadlines
