Manager, Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS)

Manage all the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) affairs at the Fresenius Kabi USA facilities in Lake Zurich, IL Region North America Headquarters (RNA-HQ), including Office Spaces as well as the Business Unit – Automated Blood Technologies (BU-ABT) Research and Development Laboratories for Medical Devices, and the Skokie Innovation and Development Center (Skokie I&DC), composed of Office Spaces and Wet Chemistry Laboratories for Pharmaceuticals, in line with the Fresenius Kabi global and Fresenius Kabi USA regional Mission, Vision, and Values statements, Company Objectives, EHS Directives, Policies, Programs, Procedures, and Standards, and business activities, to ensure compliance with relevant and applicable Federal, State, and Local Laws, Rules, Regulations, and Ordinances and to protect our employee’s occupational health, personal safety, and wellbeing, and the protection of the environment, while minimizing the Company’s general liability and exposure to environmental, health and safety risks.


  • As Manager – EHS, the position holder identifies EHS issues that are essential for full compliance and conformance to existing and planned business development. 
  • Leads and directs local personnel with EHS responsibilities (Line Management/Supervision) to ensure a standard approach to the implementation of EHS programs and procedures.
  • Works with local Engineering, Quality Assurance, Logistics, Laboratory, and Production/Supply Chain groups to address EHS project issues to ensure that EHS concerns are considered at the design stage and that adequate funds are included within projects’ capital appropriation requests to prevent costly retrofits.
  • Work with local management, landlord (property management) and building engineering / maintenance on a continuous basis to establish accurate programs and budgets for compliance with Directives, Laws, and Regulations, Global / Corporate Standards, and other EHS mandates and/or needs.
  • Provides in-house expertise, consultation, technical skills and know-how resources to all Lake Zurich RNA-HQ and Skokie I&DC departments to maintain a standard approach to problem-solving and the early introduction of EHS safeguards for new machinery, equipment, processes, and instrumentation.
  • Works with the Director/Sr. Director, EHS – Region North America and Laboratories Management / Supervision to develop local EHS action plans on an annual basis to anticipate estimated expenditure and to allow adequate resources to be allocated to enable completion of established EHS objectives.
  • Provides for effective integration of EHS issues into local business operations and contribute recommendations to key stakeholders for Site budgetary consideration, EHS review of local projects and involvement in Laboratories’ Business Reviews and Periodic Facility Meetings.
  • Ensures efficient implementation of required legislation, insurance, and Global Internal EHS Audits or External ISO 14001 / OHSAS 18001 EHS audit recommendations and standards requirements.
  • Collects, analyzes and communicates statistical data, metrics, key performance indicators (KPIs), and Occupational Injuries / Illnesses’ Surveys, related to all EHS incident occurrences to Local Management, Regional EHS, and Global EHS.
  • Assist Human Resources (HR) in the enforcement of general company work rules impacting EHS.
  • Develops and maintains Emergency Action Plans and facilitates emergency responses and training [i.e. serve as incident commander’ coordinate with landlords for fire drills, etc.].
  • Provides and facilitates training to emergency responders and develops EHS general awareness and specific training for the employee population, including new employee EHS orientations, respirator fit-testing, and similar mandatory EHS training / onboarding as needed.
  • Lead and/or support site EHS investigations, including misconduct, gross negligence, property damage, work-related accidents, occupational injuries & illnesses, near misses, regulatory violations, maintenance of OSHA-300 Logs, OSHA 300A Summaries, OSHA 301 Reports, Workers’ Compensation filings and claim management, et al.  
  • Ensure that the environmental and occupational safety management system conforms to the standard of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 (OHSAS 18001) (ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 5.3)
  • Report on the performance of the environmental and occupational safety management system, including environmental and occupational safety performance, to the general manager.   (ISO 14001  ISO 45001 5.3)



  •  Five (5) to ten (10) years of solid operational hands-on EHS management experience (including, but not limited to, environmental permitting and registrations for air, land, and water affairs, chemical safety, laboratory safety, occupational safety & health, EHS training, workers’ compensation claim management, etc).
  • Appropriate qualifications in EHS (requires at a minimum a Bachelor’s of Science degree in EHS with 5+ years of experience or a related field with 10+ years of solid experience. A Master’s of Science degree in EHS would be strongly preferred. An advanced degree in Business would be a plus. A certification or designation in EHS would be highly beneficial, a plus, but not required).
  • Excellent organizational, time management, multi-tasking, communication, interpersonal, training, and presentation skills.
  • Strong EHS Technical knowledge with a can-do attitude, demonstrated results-oriented approach, and operational hands-on skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement procedures and programs, adapt to a fast-paced environment and juggle between pressing priorities within distinct multiple sites, manage a broad technical function as an individual contributor, adjust quickly to a changing and highly-technical environment, and interact with people of differing educational and cultural backgrounds at all levels.
  • IT based skills including word-processing, spreadsheet applications, database management and electronic communication methods.
  • Ability to travel locally within the northeastern Illinois region (Melrose Park, Skokie, & Bensenville, IL) and domestically across other States in which Fresenius Kabi USA operates as/if needed. This position provides as-needed support to the Warrendale Site in PA.
