Manager, Environmental Compliance (EHS)

General Summary
The Manager, Environmental Compliance is a part of the ISRI Environmental and Safety team and provides oversight of key environmental programs, reviews and stays current on both state and federal environmental and safety regulatory activity and provides pertinent information to the ISRI membership. This position acts as a steward for assigned ISRI environmental and safety guidance documents.  This position also interfaces with members on Safety issues.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

  • Manage systems and processes to track, measure and report on results (ROI) of EHS development initiatives.
  • Develop guidance documents for environmental and safety compliance, including developing and updating related publications.
  • Provide technical assistance to members as needed and communicates that information to relevant ISRI staff.
  • Manage the Superfund Recycling Equity Act (SREA) program to include outreach program to membership, education and assistance during the ordering process, program budget projections, and tracking of key performance indicators.
  • Review and provide written updates to changes in environmental safety and health regulatory information.
  • Interact with ISRI membership staff concerning EHS issues, including but not limited to concerns and needs of chapters.
  • Respond to scientific or technical inquiries from ISRI members.
  • Perform outreach activities including developing and delivering EHS training presentations and conducting on-site audits to include but not limited to blueprint assessments.
  • Provide oversight for the development of an emergency response assessment blueprint.
  • Function as the staff liaison for EHS specific committees, workgroups and task forces.
  • Keep current on scientific and technical information as well as federal regulations related to recycling, the recycling industry, and products and materials that the industry recycles, could recycle, or will recycle.
  • Support ISRI’s Chief Scientist in managing the activities and quarterly meetings of ISRI’s Design for Recycling® Task Force.
  • Support ISRI’s Chief Scientist in managing ISRI’s efforts on internal and external scientific and technical activities and endeavors, including the REMADE Institute.
  • Represent ISRI or the industry in external stakeholder groups involving scientific and technical issues that affect recycling or the recycling industry.
  • Publish articles in Scrap magazine and other industry publications as well as publish information updates via other outlets, including but not limited to social media.

 

Job Specifications

  1. Possess a strong working knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements.
  2. Able to develop and deliver training presentations.
  3. Ability to remain current and research safety and health regulatory information.
  4. Excellent grasp of the physical sciences and engineering, including physics, chemistry and chemical or environmental engineering.
  5. Good understanding of academia, private research organizations, and US government agencies involved in scientific and technical activities and endeavors.
  6. Ability to absorb, interpret and summarize scientific and technical information quickly and accurately.
  7. Excellent oral and written communication skills with diverse audiences.
  8. Ability to work independently and also as part of a team.
  9. Able to travel domestically and internationally (25-50% of the time) and occasionally on short notice.

 

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • BS in a physical science (e.g., material science), scientific or technical discipline (e.g., industrial ecology or sustainability), or engineering (e.g., chemical engineering)
  • 6-10 years of progressive environmental experience in academia, consulting, relevant trade association, or relevant government agency.
  • Proficient computer skills with basic software programs (Excel, Word, Office and PowerPoint)

 

Preferred Education/Skills

  • MS in a physical science (e.g., material science), scientific or technical discipline (e.g., industrial ecology or sustainability), or engineering (e.g., chemical engineering)
  • Reputation as a scientific or technical authority through publications or prior activities.
  • Familiarity with recycling and recycling industry.
  • CSP, CIH, or PE (environmental) certifications.
  • Published one or more technical articles.
