Industrial Hygiene (IH) Specialist

The Corpus Christi (CC) Industrial Hygiene Specialist conducts site industrial hygiene surveys for chemical, biological and/or physical hazards of employees to assure compliance with state and federal regulations as well as CITGO standards.


This position assists in reviewing and updating site procedures to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal regulations. The CC Industrial Hygiene Specialist works with various refinery departments to address specific health and safety issues and develops the proper engineering, administrative, or PPE controls. 

Develop and conduct yearly employee exposure assessment. This task will include: 

  • Documenting yearly monitoring plan
  • Obtaining required lab media/equipment to conduct assessment
  • Performing assessment by interacting with refinery personnel
  • Prepare samples for lab analysis and complete required paperwork (air sample data form, lab chain of custody, etc.)
  • Document results in Cority database

Conduct area sampling at the Corpus Christi Refinery. This task will include: 

  • Benzene air monitoring of regulated areas at least once every six months
  • Area noise surveys for new equipment installations
  • 3-year comprehensive refinery noise survey
  • Area monitoring during refinery emergencies and odor complaints
  • Lighting surveys 

Maintain facility SDS system. Task includes: 

  • Training of new hires and refresher training of current employees on location and how to access site SDS’.
  • Submit approved SDSs to the refinery SDS coordinator to upload into the EDMS database.
  • Work with Operations and Maintenance to remove SDS’ for materials no longer used on-site.

Provide training and support (classroom and CBT review) for programs that are overseen by IH. This includes but is not limited to: 

  • Hazard Communication
  • Respiratory
  • Noise
  • Radiation
  • Benzene
  • H2S

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Coordinate the calibration and repair of IH monitoring instruments per manufactures specifications. This included noise dosimeters, sound level meters, IAQ meters, air velocity meters, constant flow air sampling pumps, and radiation meters.
  • Conducts new chemical reviews and determines safeguards for materials approved for use on-site.
  • Serve as refinery Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). Duties include maintaining regulatory compliance for the refinery radioactive material licenses and registration, train CITGO employees on radiation safety, distribution and collection of film badges, audit and train field radiographers, coordinate inventory verification and leak testing of radioactive level gauges. Manage the new 4-gas/H2S monitor program.
  • Maintain and assure proper population of the IH related SharePoint site for Corpus Christi Refinery.
  • Serve as vacation relief and back up for Industrial Hygiene Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene or related field and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in a related field.
  • Work from elevated heights.
  • Able to wear additional PPE (Respiratory protection, fall protection, protective outerwear, etc.)
  • Knowledge of field sampling instruments and techniques.
  • Knowledge of occupational standards and sampling equipment.
  • Ability to interpret, summarize and report sampling data.
  • Strong technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft office products.
  • Strong aptitude for computer and various software applications.
  • Ability to work extended hours including emergency call outs.


  • Experience in a refinery or petrochemical industry
  • Candidates must be able to obtain a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials Card)

The Maritime Transportation Security Act requires all persons who will need unescorted access to a regulated facility to have a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), issued in accordance with the rules established by the United States Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration.
