Health & Safety Manager

Description/Job Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to ensure safe practices in all activities conducted on-site by associates, customers, and visitors. Focus on monitoring, maintaining, and improving safety standards at the facility.


  • Maintain a safe work environment in accordance with OSHA, MIOSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, NIOSH, ACGIH, ANSI, and other governing agencies
  • Perform risk assessments, job safety assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring, and SDS control to ensure employee safety
  • Administer and oversee Medical Monitoring Program
  • Conduct training for employees on company safety policies, practices and programs
  • Conduct incident and accident investigations assuring corrective actions are taken to minimize or prevent similar future incidents
  • Maintain safety equipment and supplies including but not limited to weekly/monthly inspections, calibrations and certifications where applicable
  • Serve as a safety resource for the facility by frequently being out in the plant/work environment to ensure safe practices are being followed.
  • Continually audit and review site safety programs.
  • Ensure safe work permits, confined space entry permits, hot-work permits, etc. are properly completed
  • Ensure workers have the appropriate PPE for identified hazards, and approve new PPE prior to use
  • Maintain training records and/or manage them consistent with existing procedures
  • Work closely and cooperatively with site managers to accomplish shared goals
  • Investigate all accidents and incidents and prepare a written report with conclusions and recommendations
  • Lead facility Emergency Response Team (ERT)
  • Assist with ISO 9001, 14001, OHSAS 18001 programs & audits as needed
  • Interact frequently with management and hourly associates to identify and solve problems
  • Prepare site health and safety plans as necessary
  • Performs other, related duties as assigned. These are duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but which are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

JOB LEVEL: One level.

To perform the duties of this job, the employee must have good interpersonal skills and verbal communication to speak in front of groups of associates and customers. Good written communication to create literature to be read by others. Must have critical thinking skills to adequately identify and assess risk.


  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or related field
  • At least five year’s experience in a health and safety role. Demonstrated broad knowledge of safety regulations
  • Expertise in confined space entry and rescue
  • Expertise with air monitors, SCBAs, CSE ropes, harnesses, winches, tripods, etc.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Ability to deal with unstructured problems that require defensible decisions on complex safety matters
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification highly preferred.

Certifications, licenses, registrations: None required.

Language Skills:
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of associates, customers, and visitors. Ability to speak effectively in front of groups to relay information.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to perform basic math functions using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to attend to emergencies that require immediate action while assessing risks and ensuring safety for all parties involved.

While performing this job, the employee is responsible for continuous adherence to the Company’s Health & Safety Program. This includes: the health and safety of themselves and their coworkers, completing tasks in a safe manner, attending safety meetings and mandatory H&S training, and reporting any unsafe conditions, acts or unanticipated hazards to their Supervisor, General Manager or Health and Safety Specialist.  Duties and responsibilities are detailed in the H&S Program Master Document and will be provided by the H&S Specialist and/or the direct supervisor during new-hire orientation, training sessions or upon request.

Employees are required to report any concerns associated with environmental compliance to their supervisor, General Manager or Environmental Manager. Employees are also required to complete training in hazardous waste management procedures, emergency response and other topics as outlined in the facility’s training program and/or an individual training matrix.

To perform the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, and use a PC. Uses hands and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel and climb for demonstrations. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50-80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.

This work is performed in a normal office environment with frequent trips to the plant. Work inside the plant may require proper PPE. May experience dusty conditions and be exposed to various weather conditions.
