Health & Safety Director

Summary: 
This position will be responsible for the development and execution of a global health and safety strategy, including the ongoing implementation of a safety management system with standardized policies and procedures, risk mitigation efforts and culture maturity focus.

This position will fully understand regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions in which we operate, currently to include the USA, Canada, the UK, and Brazil. This position will lead the health and safety scope of any due diligence activities. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Include but are not limited to the following: (Management reserves the right to add or modify the duties and responsibilities at any time.)

  • In consultation with the VP EHS/NR, develop health and safety strategies, goals, policies & procedures and metrics to ensure continuous improvement of health and safety outcomes of employees located in the USA, Canada, UK and Brazil. 
  • Working closely with the Corporate Environmental & Sustainability Director, develop and implement systems, tools and guidance for operations and EHS leaders to ensure risk mitigation and a culture of health and safety excellence. 
  • This includes stewardship of programs such as Top 9 Hazards, Industrial Hygiene programs, Safety Management Systems, Hearts and Minds, Training Systems, Process Safety Management, Workers Compensation Programs, Joint Health & Safety Committee structures, Site Security Standards & Workplace Violence programs, all regulatory required programs (Hazard Communication, Hearing Conservation, Confined Space, etc.) and others as identified.
  • Oversee the work of site EHS leaders to ensure alignment with all of the programs above. 
  • Provide expert support to operations personnel regarding health and safety regulatory requirements in the USA, Canada, UK and Brazil. 
  • Develop metrics to reflect continuous improvements in health and safety outcomes that align with both regulatory requirements across global jurisdictions and Compass Minerals priorities.
  • Oversee the use of tools to compile these metrics and develop reports accordingly for operations leaders, senior management team and the board of directors. 
  • Ensure both compliance and best practice audit tools, reporting and follow-up is fully aligned with the appropriate regulations and company programs audited. 
  • Serve as a key contributor to H&S audits at all sites, ensuring consistent expectations and follow up to findings. 
  • Routinely provide active field leadership and presence during site visits. 
  • In collaboration with site EHS leaders, develop, implement, and ensure continual improvement of EHS policies and procedures.
  • Serve as key site resource for Health & Safety needs of the Overland Park headquarters facility.

Education and Experience:
Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety or closely related field
  • 10 years min related experience 
  • Demonstrated health and safety leadership skills 

Preferred:

  • 15-20 years’ experience with progressive responsibility for EHS&S functions
  • Technical expertise in industrial hygiene, MOL/HSE/OSHA compliance programs
  • Implementation and/or oversight of Safety Management Systems and/or Environmental Management Systems
  • CIH, CSP or CHMM or path towards these certifications highly desirable
  • Familiarity with employee groups covered by Collective Bargaining Agreements (i.e. union labor forces.)


Travel: 
This position requires approximately 50% travel with overnight stays.
