Health & Safety Coordinator

Covia is looking for a dynamic Health & Safety Coordinator who will have a positive impact on the Best Sand team at its Chardon, OH location.  As a Health & Safety Coordinator, you will manage all aspects of the Health and Safety Program in coordination with the other Supervisors. You will maintain a safe working environment and administer a safety program which meets or exceeds Corporation and regulatory agency standards.

The successful incumbent will have the following Key Accountabilities: 

  • Maintain and direct an active safety training program; including New Miner, MSHA Annual Refresher Training and Monthly Safety Meetings.
  • Schedule and conduct monthly Safety Team inspections, as well as administering other compliance/inspection programs as needed.
  • Perform and monitor noise exposure surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • Direct the plants' Hearing Conservation Programs; schedule and coordinate annual audiograms for employees.
  • Perform and monitor respirable dust surveys for all employees and work areas.
  • Direct the plants' Respiratory Protection Program; conduct the respirator fit testing.
  • Schedule and coordinate biennial employee physicals.
  • Accompany MSHA inspectors during onsite inspections.
  • Investigate and prepare reports of incidents/injuries that occur on plant property, including employee personal injury, property damage, and near-miss incidents. Assure both Supervisor and Employee participation in root cause analysis and preventative actions.
  • Ensure adequate supplies in plant first-aid centers.
  • Maintain and distribute personal protective equipment used in the plant, including respirators, hearing protection, hard hats, safety glasses, hand protection, and fall protection.
  • Monitor the fire extinguisher program to ensure appropriate and adequate equipment is installed and maintained in work areas and mobile equipment.
  • Maintain required reporting schedule of Safety & Health data in USIS.
  • Prepare and submit all required MSHA documents.
  • Develop and maintain communications with local medical facilities/clinics regarding restricted duty work programs available to employees injured on the job.
  • Maintain communications with the Corporate Safety & Health Department.
  • Maintain current working knowledge of all applicable MSHA and Covia safety and health policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Support other Covia Plants as assigned.
  • Serve as a member of the plants' Steering Team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

The successful incumbent will have the following Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in safety and health.
  • 2 years of experience in industrial hygiene preferred. Apply the principles of industrial hygiene to include recognition, evaluation and control of recognized hazards.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety & Health or Industrial Engineering or related field preferred, Associate’s degree required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Work, Excel, SharePoint.
  • Ability to collect interpret, analyze, and present data.
  • Knowledge of Federal Safety Policies and Procedures; OSHA, ANSI, NEC and General Industry Safety Standards.
  • Experience with industrial hygiene testing equipment, supplies, and personal protective equipment.
