Graymont (NZ) Limited operations employs over 90 people with a regional office in Hamilton, and quarrying and manufacturing facilities at Otorohanga on the north island, and Makareao near Otago on the south island.

HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVISOR:
This role supports the New Zealand leadership team, employees and contractors with the effective implementation and utilisation of health and safety systems and improvement initiatives aimed at achieving Graymont’s commitment to an injury-free workplace.

This role will provide information and recommendations that support the continuous identification of hazards, risks and improvements within the Graymont health, safety and quality systems, policies, principles, standards, procedures, processes and practices. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and foster a culture of “Zero Injuries”.
  • Carry out scheduled audits of Graymont NZ health, safety and quality systems and processes and provide Management with recommendations and support to ensure compliance.
  • Keep the SHQ Manager informed of all incidents or issues, especially those which may adversely affect the company’s reputation or lead to legal proceedings.
  • Interact with other Graymont HSE specialists to share best practices and retain up-to-date knowledge of Graymont’s systems, standards, procedures and processes to ensure NZ alignment with corporate direction.
  • Review and monitor the health and safety system and risks across Graymont NZ to ensure the system is effective and Graymont NZ is adequately identifying and managing hazards and risks.
  • Monitor compliance of health and safety application at site level to ensure Site Superintendents are maintaining site requirements such as competent and trained employees, contractor management, regular tests of response plans, up-to-date emergency response plans, trial evacuations, housekeeping inspections, implementation of Graymont H & S Standards, carrying out RCA investigations and implementing actions; safety related equipment checks and holding of monthly Site HSE Committee meetings etc.
  • Develop and recommend improved processes and procedures and record once approved.
  • Carry out root cause analysis (RCA) investigations as and when required.
  • Identify and contribute to operational improvement and cost efficiencies through process and system improvements.
  • Duties may be varied from time to time consistent with the employee’s training and skills and such varied duties are to be performed to standards that will be specified as required.

Role Requirements:
To be successful in the role you must experience directly in, or in support of, a health and safety focused role, as well as be able to demonstrate: 

  • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety at Work Legislation; Regulations; Standards; Rules; Codes of Practice and Guidelines gained through operational leadership or Health and Safety role.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 would be an advantage.
  • Excellent coaching and influencing skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships across all levels of the company.
  • An understanding of the requirements of a comprehensive quality control system.
  • Able to work effectively as both an andividual or as part of a team.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate Computer Skills – Word, Excel, Visio, JDE, Intelex
  • You will also need to demonstrate a commitment to a culture that values and implements sound health and safety practices.
