Global Health & Safety Program Manager

Position Purpose:
Cargill is committed to deploying a health and safety strategy that will achieve Cargill’s goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries. Establishing strong global health and safety polices and standards is critical to achieve that goal. The position is global in scope and will provide health and safety technical thought leadership and lead the development and deployment of Cargill health and safety policies, technical procedures, training and job aids at the business and site level.

Principal Accountabilities:
50%  Define and Develop Health & Safety Policy and Procedures:

  • Leads Cargill health and safety best practice policy and procedure development to effectively mitigate serious injury and fatality (SIF) risks within Cargill operations and supports Cargill Zero Harm commitment. 
  • Defines and Identifies best practices within Cargill’s existing operations and through benchmarking external organizations. 
  • In collaboration with enterprise and group EHS leaders, plant operations, manufacturing excellence and other key functions, develops and implements health and safety policies, procedures, engineering standards and necessary job aids that ensures all work at Cargill is performed safely and efficiently.
  • Focus areas will include but are not limited to: Energy isolations, electrical work practices, elevated work, hot work, bulk material handling, mobile equipment, rail safety, confined space entry, hazardous materials handling, machine safety standards etc.

20%  Develop Education and Training Solutions:

  • Leads development of health and safety competency requirements needed to comply with Cargill health and safety policies and standards.
  • In collaboration with group/enterprise EHS leaders and internal/external learning and development resources develops and implements necessary education and training materials that support business and site deployment.

15% Develop Policy and Procedure Deployment Strategy:

  • Develops strategy to deploy health and safety policies, requirements, job aids and training materials.
  • Leads development of necessary change management and communication strategy and planning.

15%  Develop Metrics and Continuous Improvement/Sustainment Mechanisms:

  • Development of metrics and health and safety content input into Cargill audit processes and management systems that measures and ensures the effective implementation and compliance with Cargill health and safety policy and standards.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • 4-year Degree preferably Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Health and Safety, Engineering)
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in operations, safety and engineering with 10+ years’ experience developing and implementing health and safety policies and standards.
  • Demonstrated understanding of industry best practice in health and safety standards
  • Ability to communicate, present to and influence all levels of the organization
  • High self-initiative, setting own goals and execution.
  • Motivations and ability to execute projects/tasks in a timely manner, strong prioritization and time management skills
  • Willingness to travel 35% including internationally
  • Ability to execute work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skill

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or degree in Health and Safety, or related technical field
  • Certified Safety Professional/Certified Industrial Hygienist.
  • Both plant level and multiple site, business unit and/or Corporate experience
  • EHS management system deployment experience.
  • Demonstrated skills at managing and leading complex and ambiguous situations
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate group discussion and meetings.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate and mediate conflict; ability to develop solutions that all parties feel are equitable.
  • Strong change management skills and demonstrated experience implementing change on a large scale
  • Experience working in a global / multi-geography environment and an understanding of the complexities it presents
  • Experience in driving or participating in organizational culture change/shift.
