Job Summary:
The Wastewater Treatment Environmental Manager is responsible to operate and direct a fully functional Wastewater Treatment Plant.  This position will maintain all equipment in the Wastewater Treatment Plant.  This position will also be responsible for the maintenance of the facility, housekeeping, safety and all regulatory compliance of the building, grounds, and treatment facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Assures that work practices and facility design are compliant with codes, standards and applicable regulations. Identifies and promotes best management practices.
  • Lead the daily operation of the wastewater treatment plant and environmental compliance for the site.  Resolve problems and issues as they arise. 
  • Manage employees associated with system, oversee that proper timely maintenance is performed on equipment and facility to include ground and wastewater treatment system.
  • Supervise the cleaning, maintenance and upkeep of process equipment in the wastewater facility.  Assist in the process as needed.  Work with plant maintenance and contractors as required. 
  • Manages facility environmental programs and ensures compliance with Federal, State and local environmental statutes.
  • Assists with accident prevention and injury and incident investigations.
  • Documents, investigates and reports all uncontrolled hazards and unsafe conditions.
  • Facilitates corrective action towards all unsafe work conditions.
  • Take and submit water samples as required.
  • Perform tests as required to treat water properly.
  • Perform BOD air monitoring.
  • Obtain air monitoring certificate by state.
  • Perform and contribute to the Site Training Plans by conducting hands on WWT safety experience training.
  • Conduct risk assessments within Wastewater Treatment facility at the task, job and process levels.
  • Ensure inspections by regulatory and outside agencies are coordinated and deficiencies minimized and corrected.
  • Train personnel in best practices for keeping water in compliance with city and state requirements.
  • Gather and submit all samples in compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Monitors gauges and charts, records data related to wastewater.
  • Ensure all documentation is in place and kept up to date.
  • Ensure the daily sampling and lab analysis is complete. 
  • Take care of any problems or issues.  Report to the plant manager when a problem needs escalated. 
  • Supervise daily operation changes to ensure they are completed correctly and in a timely manner. 
  • Audit the record keeping of lab analysis, flows, and maintenance items to make sure we have accurate information.  Provide feedback to employees to ensure correct understanding of the process so they can give accurate results.      
  • Monitor the inventory levels of chemicals, lab supplies, and spare parts.  Order when quantities are low. 
  • Complete the site environmental reporting responsibilities as assigned, (example: Tier 2, Form R, and Annual Air Emissions Inventory).  Communicate corrective actions to employees and management as needed. 
  • Work with local, state, and federal agencies on compliance issues and public complaints.  Resolve issues as needed.  Involve Plant Manager and Environmental Compliance Manager when needed.   
  • Assist Corporate team concerning all wastewater needs ie; permits etc.
  • Prepare monthly and annual discharge reports as well as other regulatory Reports.  File in appropriate location. 
  • Share information with Plant Manager when required.   
  • Train Wastewater Operators and other plant personnel (as required) on environmental job duties and responsibilities.
  • Keep up to date with current developments in environmental regulations. Share your knowledge of new developments with wastewater operators.  Provide updates to the plant management team as well. 
  • Act as plant liaison for regulatory inspections and inquiries.  Communicate problems and issues to plant manager.  Resolve issues as needed.

Other Duties and Responsibilities: 
Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for employee relations including work direction of employees, hiring, training, performance reviews, administering policies and procedures, disciplinary action, and compensation recommendations.
  • Direct implementation of departmental objectives, goals and policies.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Understand and adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices. 

Safety Protocol:

  • Stop any observed unsafe acts and obey facility safety rules and procedures.
  • Correct or report any observed safety hazards.
  • Support safety policies and programs.

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science or related field required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experienced may be considered.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum four (4) years of Wastewater Treatment experience required, (2) years within a Class III or higher facility
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred. 
  • Experience in manufacturing setting preferred.
  • Storm water discharge monitoring experience required.
  • Air monitoring experience required.
  • Surface water Discharge experience required. 

Certification/Licensure Required:

  • Wastewater Operator Class IV license required or to achieve within Company/State guidelines

Skills Required:

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with executives, managers, colleagues and individuals inside and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail in composing, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.

  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, Word, and Outlook.

  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills, establish priorities, ability to multitask, and meet deadlines.
