Georgia-Pacific has an immediate opening for an Environmental Leader at our Big Island, VA containerboard facility. The Environmental Leader creates long term value by providing leadership and strategic direction while ensuring environmental excellence and performance improvement. This is accomplished through Georgia-Pacific’s MBM culture that environmental strategies effectively address the mill’s risk profile and that Georgia-Pacific’s overarching seven element Risk Management System (RMS) is effectively applied to environmental programs.
This position reports directly to the Vice-President and General Manager of the Big Island Containerboard operation.
The Big Island mill is a union facility with approximately 330 employees, located approximately 10 miles outside of Lynchburg, VA, and about an hour from Roanoke, VA, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains.
A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
     * Providing leadership and strategic direction to achieve the environmental vision through management commitment and employee ownership
     * Ensuring the facility environmental vision remains evergreen, describing the vision of a better state and that employee objectives are connected to the vision
     * Assisting facility leadership with the development of short and long-term environmental objectives, targets and strategies
     * Providing oversight of evaluation, interpretation, and compliance with environmental laws, regulations and permits as it relates to the operation of the facility
     * Providing a strong foundation and solid understanding of the Georgia-Pacific environmental standards and all federal and State regulations
     * Utilizing plans and tools to develop environmental talent, skills and knowledge
     * Ensuring the development, improvement, and implementation of training systems to meet facility needs
     * Facilitating and representing the facility during agency inspections and public meetings
     * Applying effective communication skills to facilitate community town hall meetings
     * Providing leadership and support to community outreach program
     * Interacting with division/corporate environmental and legal resources to seek the best knowledge
What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:
     * Bachelor’s degree in engineering, environmental management, environmental science or physical science discipline
     * Three (3) years or more of environmental compliance and management systems experience
What Will Put You Ahead?
Preferred Qualifications:
     * Ten (10) years or more of environmental compliance and management systems experience
     * Experience managing compliance with laws and regulations in multiple environmental areas (water, air, waste, etc.)
     * Experience in managing environmental issues in an integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility
     * Environmental leadership experience with established track record of leading and developing direct reports
