Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) Trainee/I/II

Salary Information:  

  • Trainee level: $62,363 - $75,804 Annually
  • I level: $64,721 - $78,684 Annually
  • II level: $70,377 - $85,551 Annually

The County of Sonoma is seeking qualified candidates to fill multiple Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) Trainee/I/II positions at the Department of Health Services. These positions can be filled at either the EHS Trainee, I, or II levels. There are concurrent separate recruitments for each level.  

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and innovative team of professionals responsible for: 

  • Protecting the environment and the public by performing inspections, conducting investigations and surveys, reviewing plans, preparing reports, and processing permits, for systems and locations such as:
  • Food establishments
  • Public and private sewage systems
  • Water wells
  • Land developments
  • Correctional institutions
  • Public swimming pools
  • Other establishments and situations subject to environmental health controls
  • Educating the public by providing information, and making recommendations in the enforcement of state/local laws and regulations regarding environmental health and safety

The ideal candidates will possess the written and oral communication skills necessary to effectively respond to citizen complaints and prepare reports. Teamwork, professionalism, and a positive outlook are a must for the success of these positions. Interpersonal skills, coupled with the ability to analyze regulations and lab results, adjust to a variety of business conditions, and to communicate professionally with the public are essential. 

Please Note:
The EHS Trainee level requires possession of a valid letter of eligibility issued by the State of California to start a trainee program. The EHS I and II levels require a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist from the State of California.
