Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Technician

Johns Manville in Penbryn, NJ is currently recruiting for an Environmental Health & Safety Technician. This plant produces fiber glass building insulation products. The Environmental, Health and Safety Technician will be responsible for supporting the health, safety and environmental functions at his/her base plant. The focus is to ensure effective management of EHS systems while maintaining a safe workplace and compliance with applicable health, safety and environmental regulations.

Your Day to Day:

  • Always use safe work practices, follow all safety rules and procedures, immediately report any hazardous conditions, and fully participate in safety programs
  • Wear all personal protective equipment as required by management, including but not limited to all or some of the following; protective shoes, glasses, ear plugs, bump cap or hard hat, gloves, dust mask, or respirator
  • Complete monthly CBTs or other training as required and assist others as needed
  • Complete environmental and safety inspections using GetData and/or manual recording
  • Assist with delivering scheduled monthly department safety meetings, reporting, and communications
  • Ability to apply Lean/Six Sigma techniques
  • Provide documentation and reports as required for plant and division reporting
  • Ability to conduct and coordinate safety programs (Behavior Based Safety/Life Critical Program)
  • Conduct safety orientations for new hires, outside contractors and visitors, as requested
  • Audit personnel and equipment for safety standards and environmental compliance
  • Assist with monthly compliance training
  • Occasional instruct new or lesser experienced employees on the job
  • Complete all necessary training assignments
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor


What you bring to the team:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Minimum of one year of demonstrated, related safety and environmental experience and/or training.
  • Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to expresses ideas and thoughts verbally; expresses ideas and thoughts in written form; exhibits good listening and comprehension; keeps others adequately informed; selects and uses appropriate communication methods.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Advanced knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Photo editing software)


Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 10 or 30 Hour trained and First Responder (CPR/First Aid) trained
  • Visible Emissions Training

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and communicate accurately with coworkers. The employee will frequently engage in repetitive motions. The employee must frequently, lift, push or pull 50 pounds and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Visual acuity is required to work around and with machinery including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment
This job is in an industrial, manufacturing environment. The job requires working frequently around and with heavy machinery with moving mechanical parts, industrial ovens, and mobile equipment. The environment is not climate controlled and employees must be able to work in environments that may be extremely hot and humid or cold depending upon the operation and the season. Walking surfaces can be wet, dusty, and uneven. Areas of the building where work must be done have high noise levels, vibration, and/or fumes. Some working areas contain the presence of airborne particles which can irritate the skin or eyes. The manufacturing process involves toxic or caustic chemicals. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment which includes steel toed shoes, ear protection, eye protection, gloves, head protection and in certain areas may be required to where dust masks or respirators.
