Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Supervisor

This position will provide environmental, health/safety & security functional support to the Amherst Salt Plant, located in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Primary responsibilities include ensuring compliance with applicable environmental regulations, safety/health regulations & standards, development/implementation of security controls & best practices, and support the plant food safety program. This position requires a result-oriented person capable of working in a highly-collaborative teamwork atmosphere.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Include but are not limited to the following: (Management reserves the right to add or modify the duties and responsibilities at any time.) 

  • Maintain Environment, Health, Safety & Security (EHS&S) Policy and associated management system
  • Drive the company’s “Getting To Zero” initiative and continuous improvement in EHS&S performance
  • Support EHS&S Strategic Plan and Annual Operating Plan for site, business unit, and all-company basis
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with all federal and provincial environmental, health/safety and security regulations
  • Ensure timely and complete reporting for all internal/external EHS&S reporting requirements
  • Maintain professional relationship with DOL to ensure essential cooperative atmosphere for continuous improvement of all matters related to safety & health of the workforce
  • Participate and administer the Joint Health & Safety Committee
  • Manage all training activities – employee, contractor, visitor, etc.
  • Manage workers compensation program through the NS WCB
  • Manage site security to safeguard employees, property & assets
  • Assist in management of site loss prevention program
  • Assist in management of site food safety program
  • Completion of other duties as assigned

To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to carry out each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. The incumbent will have general knowledge of Nova Scotia EHS&S regulations and will be expected to develop extensive knowledge of such regulations. General knowledge of behavioral-based safety programs is a plus. Incumbent must have good organizational skills and self-discipline for timely completion and follow-up of assigned tasks and accurate collection & tracking of required data.

Education and Experience:
This position requires an educational background and qualifications as follows: associates or bachelors degree in technical discipline (e.g., engineering, environmental science, industrial hygiene, kinesiology, safety management, other sciences, etc.); and certification in an EHS&S or related field with 4-6 years experience preferably working in an industrial setting and demonstrating the ability to effectively work as a member of a team. If incumbent has engineering degree, the position shall be re-titled as Environment, Health/Safety & Security Engineer. Preference will be given to individuals with a desire for continuous learning and professional growth. Incumbent must be comfortable in developing and delivering technical presentations to individuals and to groups.

Limited travel, potentially 1 to 3 trips per year for purposes of specialized training & professional development.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be PC proficient and experienced in Microsoft Office applications
