Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

 The Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist will contribute to ensuring all EHS programs and training is in compliance with Merck Corporate procedures and all applicable local and regional regulations. This individual will lead continuous improvement initiatives and implement best practices to improve the site’s EHS program. They will partners with operations to develop objectives to achieve these goals in alignment with site business goals and values.
 
Specific objectives will include:
  • Develop enhanced EHS procedures, guidelines and training programs as needed.
  • Monitor compliance to EHS training and site procedures.
  • Analyze safety metrics and review incidents weekly and monthly to identify incident trends. Communicate trends to leadership.
  • Identify EHS program and training improvement opportunities.
  • Develop, execute, and oversee an effective audit strategy to ensure regulatory and corporate EHS program compliance.
  • Advise the organization of regulatory agency compliance changes and their impact to the EHS program and organization. 
  • Provide subject matter expertise on OSHA record keeping decisions. 
  • Audit record keeping practices and system entries to ensure compliance.
  • Oversees department-specific IT systems related to EHS, providing project management to third party vendors when necessary.
  • Deliver on-time and quality projects.
  • As needed, complete hazard assessments, industrial hygiene monitoring, process hazard analysis, life safety reviews, incident investigations, environmental regulatory field analysis, environmental reports and permit applications.

Qualifications
 
Education Minimum Requirement: 
  • BS/BA in safety, environmental, ergonomics or a science field required

Required Experience and Skills: 
  • Demonstrate strong project management techniques.
  • Strong incident investigation skills.
  • Understanding of data analysis tools.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability 
  • Experience in developing and managing EHS program, training and systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with site leaders.
  • Ability to develop and implement department goals and strategies. 
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • 3 + years applied professional EHS work experience preferred. 
  • Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment. 
  • Certified Safety Professional an advantage
