Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist III

Thermo Fisher Scientific is currently seeking an EHS Specialist III for an exciting opportunity to join our team in Grand Island, NY.

Position Summary:

Focus on protecting the associates, the environment and the facility from harm. Establish systems and provide leadership for the identification and monitoring of workplace safety risks and environmental impact through the analysis of work processes, materials, equipment and the work habits of employees. Provide evaluation of solutions, residual risk and prioritized management action. Identify potential or actual areas of non-compliance through audits or inspections.

Ensure appropriate corrective and preventive action is taken to address identified issues. Provide leadership through the active management and effective prioritization of EHS activities. . Facilitate observation based safety program.

The candidate will develop, implement and improve written environmental, health and safety programs based on OSHA and EPA regulations, Thermo Fisher Scientific corporate standards, and best management practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate root cause determination, complete accident investigations and implementation of corrective action activities.
  • Interface with Human Resources and health care professionals regarding return to work programs, managing injuries and workman’s compensation claims.
  • Facilitate and grow the site observation based safety program.
  • Maintain OSHA accident and illness log(s) for the Grand Island organization umbrella.
  • Complete job safety and ergonomic analysis, make recommendations and work with management to implement changes when necessary.
  • Guide safety committee
  • Complete process hazard analyses
  • Provide primary point of contact for specific environmental and safety programs.
  • Develop, review and update specific environmental and safety programs.
  • Interface with regulatory agencies and third parties as needed based on project or program responsibilities.
  • Assist with management of hazardous waste program.
  • Develop and maintain facility safety and environmental internal audit programs.
  • Conduct site inspections for environmental and safety compliance.
  • Assist with preparation of government reports and permits/certifications.
  • Assist in safety committees and awareness programs.
  • Evaluate new hazardous materials to ensure compliance in EHS requirements and facility procedures.
  • Conduct EHS reviews for new product development, facility modification, product manufacturing modifications and new equipment/machinery installations.
  • Develop and deliver training programs.
  • Advise on hazard communication and MSDS programs.
  • Participate in organization response group and evacuation planning.
  • Develop programs and assist with Industrial Hygiene sample collection and education awareness.
  • Perform all job duties in a safe manner and obeys all safety policies and procedures
  • Perform all job duties consistent with the Code of Ethics and the 4-I values
  • Perform all job duties within ISO standards, regulatory or statutory requirements
  • Perform other duties and cross training as assigned

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in a technical field (chemistry,  biology, environmental, safety, etc.) with training in core Environmental, Health and Safety disciplines.
  • 5+ years of experience in safety or environmental field in a manufacturing environment.
  • Exercise judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
  • Direct experience performing ergonomic evaluations and recommendations.
  • Obtain solutions through independent analysis.
  • Experience in local, state and federal environmental, health and safety regulatory compliance.
  • Good technical and project management skills with the ability to successfully      manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities.
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to develop and foster creative and innovative solutions.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to discern and appropriately communicate sensitive issues.
  • Normally receives no instruction on routine work and general instructions on new assignments.
  • Physical demand lifting 50 to 70 pounds and being able to move 55 gallon drums with drum carts.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • OSHA  30 hr course or equivalent
  • Experience working at an ISO 13485 facility.
  • Experience with OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP)
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) is a plus.
  • Stronger focus on safety than environmental.
  • Experience with behavior based safety programs is a plus.
