Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION:                     

Primarily responsible for leading the safety and compliance function for the assigned plant/complex, and communicating and fostering the vision for safety and compliance for Wayne Farms LLC. Will also manage safety and compliance initiatives to assure prevention of injury, illness, property and environmental damage, assuring compliance with Wayne Farms, OSHA, EPA, State and other regulatory agency requirements. Will have expertise in and responsibility for one or more specialty disciplines across Wayne Farms.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:                          

  •  Effectively manage Safety & Loss Prevention Programs for the complex/plant to assure prevention of injuries, illnesses and property loss.
  • Provide leadership to drive a culture of safety excellence.
  • Effectively manage regulatory requirements to assure prevention of citations and penalties.
  • Manage medical and worker’s compensation related activities for the plant/complex.
  • Manage the safety program established for contractors to include:Schedule and conduct monthly safety meetings.
    • Assuring appropriate documentation is collected (e.g. Certificate of Insurance, Safety Training, OSHA log, etc.).
    • Assuring safety training is conducted and followed by all contractors.
    • Assuring known potential hazards are communicated, and emergency action plan is understood and followed.
  • Provide outlines to supervisors for safety talks with a checklist.
  • Revise and update site specific Safety Programs, assuring training is conducted for updated programs.
  • Oversee and assure completion of safety training portion of new hire orientation.
  • Provide annually required safety training to all hourly and salaried employees.
  • Coordinate and manage PSM & Hazwopper activities including RMP as needed.
  • Monitor and administer safety programs (e.g. Lock-out/Tag-out, Confined Space, Ergonomics, Hot Work, etc.).
  • Manage plant safety inspection and audit activities.
  • Conduct accident investigations with supervisors.
  • Assist complex/operations manager with regulatory inspections.
  • Oversee site security functions, to include managing security personnel.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert and is responsible for one or more specialty disciplines across all plants/complexes.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required by management.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  1-3 direct reports (i.e. Plant Nurse, Safety & Health Technician, and other medical/security support personnel).
  • This is a Leader of People position with required competencies:  Sizing up People, Delegation, Planning, Customer Focus and Conflict Management.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. Safety, Environmental or Health Management, Industrial Hygiene, Compliance, etc.) from an accredited institution.
  • 5 years relevant safety management experience.
  • Oversight experience of multiple locations.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  •  5+ years’ relevant safety management experience within a food manufacturing environment.
  • Safety Professional Certification

 

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ammonia refrigeration and electrical systems.
  • Strong sense of urgency combined with the ability to collaborate and influence others.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills; with the ability to use appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to inspire and guide individuals toward goal achievement, and modify behavior to accommodate tasks, situations, and individuals involved.
  • Effectively manage conflict.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills including the ability to correspond verbally and in writing with regulatory compliance personnel, Wayne Farms’ management, and Operations personnel.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in building effective relationships within an organization, as well as with outside agencies.
  • Ability to handle and resolve most issues independently.
  • Appropriately operate with frequent access to confidential information.
  • High work capacity, dependable, results oriented and strong sense of urgency.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with precise attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated sound work ethic, honesty and moral character.
