To support the facility management goal of providing a safe and secure environment for our employees, contractors, visitors and the surrounding community in cooperation with facility and corporate Operations and EHS objectives, targets and goals. To ensure compliance with all EHS regulatory and Responsible Care requirements. To understand and strategically reduce EHS risk to all stakeholders via a proactive and continuous improvement approach.

This position will interact with senior executives, functional leaders, Service Center managers, and operations staff throughout the organization. Key functional groups and customers for this position are EH&S, Quality, Operations, Inspections, Materials, NDE, Customer Service, Engineering, external regulatory agencies, and Maintenance Procurement among others.

This position will focus on research and analysis of environmental, health, safety, and quality related issues. It is an independent, cross-functional key position that contributes significant knowledge and influence to the GATX Operations group in order to achieve our defined initiatives. This position must also be effective in working with and influencing hourly union employees.

Direct reports may include the Safety Stand-By Attendant and Joint Health & Safety Committee.


  • Lead and manage the maintenance of the Service Center’s EH&S program. Maintain strong presence on the shop floor and perform regular facility inspections to ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and GATX policies and procedures (including RCMS). Ensure that all facility employees receive required EH&S training. Lead EHS continuous improvement / corrective actions. Manage incidents and injury claims whenever they occur at a 2-shift operation.
  • Analyze and communicate the safety performance (incident rate, training, worker’s compensation) to all appropriate supervisors and managers. Establish and implement improvement plans based upon analysis to satisfy GATX Operations Group’s Initiatives and site-specific needs.
  • Control and communicate documents pertinent to the EH&S systems to all affected personnel including, but not limited to EH&S policies and procedures and all regulatory and corporate reporting requirements. 
  • Serve as the technical liaison for researching, analyzing, and communicating on EH&S issues to regulatory bodies and GATX Commercial and Operations functions.


  • Bachelor’s degree with concentration in Science, Engineering, Operations or related field, or Associate’s Degree with equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of experience in a production environment with safety and environmental responsibility (or equivalent in EHS consulting role).
  • Specific knowledge and experience with confined space entry, elevated work hazards and incident prevention.
  • Working knowledge of Quebec environmental and safety regulations and Workers Compensation Board / case management procedures.
  • Responsible Care Management System and/or SafeStart experience is a plus.
  • Railroad or tank cleaning experience is a plus.
  • Experience in union environment is a plus.

  • Physical requirements include outdoor work (in cold environment, climbing stairs or ladders and some heavy lifting.
