Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Primarily responsible for managing the Environmental, Health, Safety and Fleet safety compliance programs, driving a culture of safety awareness and excellence. Will inspect facilities for compliance issues and provide updated, ongoing training to alleviate risk and prevent injuries, illnesses and property loss. Ensures compliance with company, OSHA, EPA, State and Federal regulatory agency requirements by leading improvement efforts at the direction of the Corp. Safety Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

  • Independently manage the Environmental, Health, Safety and Loss Prevention programs for assigned locations (processing, feed mill, and hatchery) providing guidance and comprehensive training to drive a culture of safety awareness and excellence
  • Manage and audit to regulatory requirements; ensure compliance with all OSHA, EPA, State and Federal agency regulations through testing and investigations for the prevention of citations and/or penalties due to compliance infractions.
  • Perform industrial hygiene testing (i.e. dust/ air sampling, water discharge, etc.) for compliance with regulatory standards; inform appropriate personnel of infractions, determine root cause and recommend process improvements to prevent further incidents
  • Audit equipment, processes and procedures; recommend potential improvements to reduce potential for accidents or regulatory infractions.
  • Manage Fleet Safety including accident investigations, suspected substance abuse issues, driver safety (drive camera review for unsafe practices)
  • Manage contractor’s safety program ensuring appropriate documentation (Certificate of Insurance, Safety Training, OSHA log, etc.), ensure training and communication of safety practices, known potential hazards, and emergency action plans and is communicated clearly understood and followed.
  • Seek ways to improve processes and minimize risk in area(s) of expertise; develop, maintain and train to new standards and processes
  • Manage, revise and update site specific Safety programs; ensure training is conducted for all impacted workers and that required documentation
  • Manage safety training programs for new hire and for required annual programs (i.e. Lock-out/Tag-out, Confined Space, Ergonomics, Hot Work, etc.), ensuring training is completed on-time and workers understand and follow guidelines.
  • Manage PSM and Hazwoper activities including RMP as needed. Manage medical and workers compensation program and related activities for plant/complex
  • Manage safety inspection and audit activities, assisting leadership with regulatory inspections; follow up on non-compliant issues and communicate findings and impact to appropriate leaders.
  • Conduct accident investigations in tandem with leadership to ensure countermeasures are set in place to prevent further accidents
  • Facilitate a safety conscious work population by conducting monthly safety meetings and by developing, managing and providing a safety matrix checklist that outline supervisor/ manager safety accountabilities.
  • Work with Safety Focus Lead and Corporate Safety Director to develop and implement new and revised processes Other duties as required by management

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1-4 direct reports (i.e. Safety Mgr., Plant Nurse, Safety & Health Technician, Chemical Process Safety Management Coordinator and/or other medical/security support personnel) This is a Leader of People position with required competencies:  Sizing up People, Delegation, Planning, Customer Focus and Conflict Management.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline (i.e. Safety, Environmental or Health Management, Industrial Hygiene, Compliance, etc.) from an accredited institution.

Safety Professional certification preferred

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum five (5) years relevant safety management experience.
  • Experience within a food manufacturing environment preferred
  • Minimum two (2) years demonstrated experience managing direct reports with the ability to use appropriate interpersonal styles and methods to inspire and guide individuals toward goal achievement.
  • Multiple location oversight required
  • Ability to appropriately handle situations, resolving issues efficiently and effectively
  • Proficient computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Excellent organizational skills with precise attention to detail
  • Ability to adhere and maintain strict confidentiality standards

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

Follow departmental and company safety policies and programs Wears required PPE and ensures compliance from others in all areas where required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work weekends and frequent walks throughout facilities (plant, feed mills).
  • Occasionally lifts up to 40 pounds.
  • Frequently stoops, kneels and crawls.
