Coherent Inc., has an outstanding opportunity for a skilled EH&S Specialist/Technician at its Sunnyvale CA location in the San Francisco Bay area. Primary responsibility is to maintain compliance with Coherent’s Environmental, Health and Safety program, especially hazardous materials handling, including toxic gases. The successful candidate will be interested in growing their career with Coherent, and increasing their EH&S responsibilities at the facility.

Paramount to this role is purchasing and distributing production chemicals, handling and packaging hazardous wastes, managing the emergency response team, and actively overseeing the operation of a wastewater treatment system. The candidate will also oversee the implementation of employee safety programs, conduct routine facility inspections and safety incident investigations, and interact with employees in regards to safety compliance. Recordkeeping is an equally important aspect of this role to maintain environmental permits issued by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the City of Sunnyvale.

The EH&S Specialist/Technician may cross-train to work at Coherent’s laser manufacturing facility in Santa Clara (approximately 3 miles away) in a similar role. The Santa Clara facility has approximately 625 employees and staffs engineers, manufacturing technicians, and administration. The Sunnyvale facility has 30 employees.

The EH&S Specialist/Technician will work closely with the EH&S and Facilities managers to expand their EH&S skills and increase their role responsibilities. Special projects may be assigned by the EH&S and/or Facilities Manager.

EH&S Program Management

  • Monitor EH&S programs and permits to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Actively participate in the EH&S Leadership Group, a consortium of Coherent EH&S employees in the western US.
  • Actively promote a positive environmental, health and safety culture by providing leadership and support to employees.
  • Investigate employee incidents and near misses; support job hazard evaluations and appropriate improvement plans.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections to identify potential hazardous conditions, and recommend / implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ensure employee safety, health and environmental training is assigned and completed.

 Emergency Response

  • Manage emergency response training provider and training schedule. Actively participate in emergency response team training, including as the Incident Commander; participate in group training and drills with the Santa Clara’s facility emergency response team.
  • Conduct routine building evacuation drills.
  • Maintain emergency response equipment, testing, and training records.
  • Be familiar with the fire / life safety alarm system.

 Hazardous Materials / Hazardous Waste

  • Oversee the functioning of the Acid Waste Neutralization system ensuring daily operation and compliance with regulatory permit.
  • Monitor production areas and equipment for chemical leaks and spills.
  • Order, store, and distribute chemicals and gases used in production; maintain chemical storage rooms and hazardous waste building.
  • Manage / package hazardous wastes, manage hazardous waste profiles and manifests, and manage hazardous waste disposal and suppliers.

Regulatory Reporting / Inspections

  • Manage reporting compliance to satisfy conditions described in permits and agency requirements.
  • Represent the facility during regulatory inspections and in the course of routine periodic corporate audits; execute action plans to close audit findings.
  • Report all deviations from established policies, procedures, federal or state requirements, and changes caused by non-compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain all applicable records for safety, health and environmental protection compliance.

Education and Work Experience:

  • DOT Certification (current or previously certified).
  • Associates Degree, Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent in Science, Technology, or Engineering.
  • 3-5 years managing hazardous materials and hazardous waste; experience in semiconductor wafer manufacturing highly preferred.
  • Awareness of OSHA regulations, and local, State, and Federal environmental and hazardous materials regulations, including toxic gases (TG).
  • Able to manage multiple projects, be self-directed, and document actions
  • Able to safely lift 35 pounds of hazardous materials.
  • Able to wear air purifying respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Ability to climb ladders to access AWN & Building roof.
