Coherent Inc., has an outstanding opportunity for an experienced EH&S Engineer at its Sunnyvale CA location in the San Francisco Bay area. Primary responsibility is to ensure compliance with Coherent’s Environmental, Health and Safety programs.   

Responsibilities range from environmental permit compliance, hazardous materials management, emergency response team management, and developing operational procedures to support corporate guidelines. He/she will build rapport with production and engineering managers, respond to workplace incidents and address hazards, and educate employees on injury prevention through safety training and direct interaction.

The EH&S Engineer will cross-train to work at Coherent’s laser manufacturing facility in Santa Clara (approximately 3 miles away) in a similar role, including laser safety. The Santa Clara facility has approximately 625 employees and staffs engineers, manufacturing technicians, and administration. The Sunnyvale facility has 30 employees.

Paramount to this role is actively overseeing the operation of the wastewater treatment system, purchasing and distributing chemicals, handling hazardous wastes, managing the emergency response team, and acting as the liaison with regulatory agencies such as BAAQMD, City of Sunnyvale, and CalEPA.

The EH&S Engineer will work closely with the EH&S and Facilities managers at the Santa Clara facility to help build and standardize EH&S processes and programs. Key responsibilities may also include specific, Facilities-related projects as indicated by the Facilities Manager and/or EH&S Manager.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent in Science, Technology, or Engineering
  • 8-10 years managing EH&S programs; experience in semiconductor wafer manufacturing highly preferred
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, and local, State, and Federal environmental and hazardous materials regulations, including toxic gases (TGO)
  • Program or Project Management experience a plus
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 a plus
  • Industrial Hygiene experience a plus
  • Able to manage multiple projects, be self-directed, and document actions
  • Able to safely lift 35 pounds of hazardous materials
  • Able to wear air purifying respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)

Essential Responsibilities - EH&S Program Management: 

  • Develop, implement, and monitor EH&S programs and permits to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Actively participate in the EH&S Leadership Group, a consortium of Coherent EH&S employees in the western US.
  • Actively promote a positive environmental, health and safety culture by providing leadership to employees and managers; encourage individual and group ownership of EH&S performance.
  • Conduct/coordinate risk assessments to identify environmental hazards and occupational/safety hazards.
  • Investigate employee incidents and near misses; lead job hazard evaluations and develop appropriate improvement plans.
  • Conduct routine facility inspections to identify potential hazardous conditions, and recommend / implement appropriate corrective actions.
  • Conduct or direct employee safety, health and environmental training.

Emergency Response: 

  • Act as Incident Commander for the facility’s emergency response team; participate in group training and drills under the direction the Santa Clara emergency response team.
  • Conduct routine building evacuation drills.
  • Maintain emergency response equipment, testing, and training records.
  • Be familiar with the fire / life safety alarm system.

Hazardous Materials / Hazardous Waste: 

  • Oversee the functioning of the Acid Waste Neutralization system ensuring daily operation and compliance with regulatory permit.
  • Monitor production areas and equipment for chemical leaks and spills.
  • Order, store, and distribute chemicals and gases used in production; maintain chemical storage rooms and hazardous waste buildings.
  • Manage / package hazardous wastes, manage hazardous waste profiles and manifests, and manage hazardous waste disposal and suppliers. 

Regulatory Reporting / Inspections: 

  • Submit routine reports to satisfy conditions described in permits, agency, or corporate reporting requirements.
  • Represent the facility during regulatory inspections and in the course of routine periodic corporate audits; prepare and execute action plans to close audit findings.
  • Report all deviations from established policies, procedures, federal or state requirements, and changes caused by non-compliance with regulations.
  • Maintain all required records applicable to safety, health and environmental protection compliance.
