Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director

Neighborhood Health is an innovative network of 13 community health center in Nashville, Lebanon, and Hartsville, Tennessee.  We provide comprehensive primary care, integrated behavioral health, and dental services to almost 30,000 patients.  Our patients primarily include immigrants, residents of public housing, individuals experiencing homelessness, and person living with addiction.  As a federally qualified health center, we provide care without regard to health insurance or a patient’s ability to pay.  We also strive to improve our Patient Centered Medical Home model to ensure all patients get the right high-quality care, at the right place and the right time. 

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director is part of the Operations team, and works in close collaboration with the Quality Improvement committee. Environmental health and safety (EHS) director is responsible for all aspects of an organizations compliance with occupational and environmental laws and regulations. This responsibility encompasses a wide array of activities.

The EHS director must assist with the development of, carry out implementation & provide ongoing monitoring of compliance in, but not limited to, the following areas:  Infection Control & Sterilization practices; Environment of Care and Safety programs. They will provide regularly scheduled and unscheduled site visits, organization wide, to ensure complete regulatory requirement compliance. The EHS director must be proactive in working with regulatory agencies to learn about upcoming changes and prepare their organization to meet changing regulatory requirements in collaboration with the Operations team. They help repair damage and develop strategies to prevent future violations from occurring. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Licensed RN or LPN with two or more years experience
  • Excellent written oral communication skills
  • Strong Time Management & Organizational Skills
  • Advanced skillset with MS Word, Outlook, and Excel required
  • Strong skills in process analysis and problem solving
  • Knowledge of accepted ambulatory center practices
  • Knowledge of accreditation standards applicable to ambulatory care centers
  • Ability to interpret standards, policies and procedures and to apply them in specific situations
  • Thorough knowledge of Joint Commission  performance improvement requirements, HIPAA regulations, OSHA regulations, and others as needed
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision
  • Cultural sensitivity with the ability to communicate orally in and in writing to individuals and groups of varying cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Ability to work collegially with staff and teams in multiple locations
  • Demonstrates an interdisciplinary team approach through collaboration with all departments

 SALARY GRADE:  Salaried/Exempt

 RESPONSIBLE TO:  Chief Operating Officer

 RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provide collaborative leadership in the development, implementation,and management of evidence based clinical practices that focus on infection prevention, and enhance the infection control program. Stays up to date with any changes or recommendations for Infection Control.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities and consult in the implementation of educational programs
  • Participate on the Quality Improvement Committee
  • Coordinate efforts with the Operations team to manage risk
  • Conducts Root Cause Analysis (RCA), not limited to, needle sticks and medication/vaccination administration related events
  • Develop/Maintain the Infection Control plan
  • Chair the Infection Control and Safety Committees
  • Develop/Maintain the Environment of Care plan
  • Plan and promote Safety programs at UNHS
  • Conduct environmental and safety audits
  • Develop/Maintain safety policies and training
  • Maintain knowledge of all OSHA standards and administrative practices
  • Remain knowledgeable of current regulations in areas of responsibility and inform the QI Director, COO and other staff as needed of any new and/or revised regulations imposed
  • Provide training as directed on current and new standards as they emerge
  • Develop policies, procedures and practices designed to provide oversight and facilitate compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
  • Identify potential areas of compliance, vulnerability and risk
  • Coordinate, train and monitor the medical staff regarding the policies and procedures of the Tennessee VFC program
  • Coordinate, train, and test competencies for Waived Testing
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor Employee Health including TB testing, and necessary vaccinations for employees
  • Order HIV testing supplies via State of Tennessee contact and submit monthly reports
  • Develop/Maintain Hand-washing policies and monitor staff for compliance
  • Manage adverse occurrence and incident reports tracking system to insure that all proper procedures are being followed.
  • Report occurrences to the QI committee
  • And other duties as assigned

 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1.  Work is varied in nature and is performed with frequent interruptions.  Work requires close attention to detail, accuracy, documentation and timeliness in fulfilling duties and reports
  2. Work requires sitting, standing, and/or walking for periods of five hours or more, moving and examining objects at high and low reach, and reading for extended periods.
