Environmental, Health & Safety Director

Carnegie Mellon, one of the world leaders in higher education and research, is seeking an experienced leader to take on the role of Director, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). This leadership position is a part of a growing Enterprise Risk Management organization. ERM is committed to helping the university actively manage and mitigate the many inherent risks associated with operating a global institution of higher education. The ERM program helps to bolster ongoing efforts to keep the campus community safe and resilient. EH&S is dedicated to providing health and safety services that protect the university community and the environment.

You will be responsible for achieving excellence in safety performance, and leading compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. We will look to you to provide leadership, direction, and oversight to a team of talented professionals regarding multiple aspects of this area, including Lab and Research Safety, Hazardous and Environmental Waste Management, Fire Safety, Occupational Safety, Safety Training, and Radiation and Laser Safety.

Responsibilities include: 

  • Program Administration: Provide strategic leadership and direction in departmental operations to ensure functions are operating in accordance with the mission and values of the department and the university.
  • Compliance: Provide direction and oversight to ensure compliance with regulations
  • Organizational Planning: Develops, implements, and maintains departmental policies, strategies, and programs to successfully achieve the management and mitigation of EH&S risks.
  • Program Process Improvements: Establishes and monitors key performance metrics to measure performance progress and to evaluate EHS program effectiveness; lead the organization on performance improvements and leads improvement initiatives. Awareness and understanding of regulatory changes that affect the program, and make changes as needed.
  • Safety Inspections: Lead and provide direction in the scheduling, coordination, and collaboration regarding all aspects of safety inspections.
  • Safety Training: Responsible for the leadership, oversight, and direction of all aspects of safety training including classroom, online, and establishment of a training calendar of activities.
  • Chemical Inventory Management: Provide leadership and direction in monitoring the purchase, use, inventory, documentation, and disposal of chemicals and radioactive isotopes.
  • Incident Command: Act as the Incident Commander during EH&S related emergency events.

We are looking for someone who exhibits excellent writing, communication, organization, and leadership skills. You should demonstrate the ability to operate effectively in a collaborative environment where you will need to influence diverse constituents. We will seek a leader who has superior planning, and project management skills. 


  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Safety Science, or related field
  • 7+ years of EH&S management experience
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Chemical Hygiene Officer (CHO), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), and/or Certified Health Professional (CHP) required
