Environmental Engineer

The Environmental Engineer is responsible to ensure (petrochemical / ABS plastics manufacturer) plant compliance with all applicable local, state and federal environmental regulations, corporate environmental guidelines, and plant initiatives for maintaining good community relations through understanding, monitoring, and documenting compliance.

The INEOS ABS manufacturing facility produces plastic polymers and is located in Addyston, OH, just outside of Cincinnati, OH. INEOS ABS produces a well-balanced portfolio of high quality products with a strong focus on specialty ABS. Its leading technology and application development platform is widely recognized in the industry, making it the provider of choice for customers requiring value-added properties such as color, toughness, durability, heat resistance and appearance.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Design, implement, and monitor site programs and process conditions to maintain compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Provide the necessary written reports to local, state, and federal agencies at the required frequency.
  • Provide required notifications to authorities when environmental deviations occur.
  • Perform emissions calculations and air dispersion modeling to support emissions inventory, TRI, spill reporting, and RMP compliance activities.
  • Review and agree upon any unplanned emission from the site.
  • Review all written records collected that document compliance.
  • Monitor performance of the plant’s flare operations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to assist the site’s production, maintenance, and technical support areas’ environmental compliance efforts.
  • Submit all necessary reports to the regulatory authorities.
  • Remain aware of pending new or modified regulations and the impact they may have on plant operations.
  • Review new state and federal air pollution regulations to determine their impact on plant operations.
  • Develop comments on proposed environmental regulations to minimize adverse impacts to the plant.
  • Negotiate permit conditions with regulatory agencies to minimize adverse impacts to the plant.
  • Primary environmental issue liaison between the site and the community.
  • Investigate and document all external complaints (i.e. noise, odor, dusting)
  • Attend public advisory group meetings and report on the site’s environmental performance.
  • Notify the public advisory group of all release notifications that had to be made to an environmental agency. 


Training, Skills & Knowledge Required

  • Bachelors degree in environmental, chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • Preferably at least 3 years of related experience in environmental compliance (Title V, RCRA, MACT).
  • Strong technical and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including with governmental agencies.
  • Excellent written / oral negotiating skills, especially with regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage progress and deliver multiple and competing priorities.
  • Work and interact effectively as a team member.
  • Organizes work effectively and use available resources.
  • Excellent organizational skills and a systematic approach to problem definition and solution development.
  • Adherence to the site 20 Principles for Managing Behavioral Safety and Process Safety.


Physical Requirements, Visual Acuity and Environmental Factors

  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading. Must have the ability to see written documents, computer screens, and to adjust focus.
  • The worker must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.
  • The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office or administrative work).
