Environmental Engineer - Air

Georgia-Pacific’s Cedar Springs Mill is one of the largest producers of containerboard in the United States. The customer base includes external and international customers, as well as internal Georgia-Pacific box plants.  The mill, located in Cedar Springs, Georgia is about 30 miles from Dothan, Alabama.  In operation since 1963, this mill employees around 500 people.

Environmental Engineer - This role will work within the Cedar Springs Environmental team, helping ensure compliance with State and Federal environmental regulations for this global supplier of Containerboard. They will be expected to implement and maintain environmental management systems that promote environmental excellence.  In addition, they will support the facility’s efforts in conforming to company policies and procedures, such as Georgia-Pacific's Environmental Compliance Standards.  This role will initially be focused on air emissions compliance and permitting. However, as a member of the mill’s environmental team, this role will eventually grow in proficiency to provide assistance across all environmental media and programs.

A Day In The Life Typically Includes:
Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Complete permit applicability assessments and obtain and maintain necessary environmental permits and licenses
  • Provide support in maintaining compliance with environmental permits and regulatory requirements, including managing air compliance testing
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports to outside agencies
  • Perform release reporting and recordkeeping as required by company policy, environmental regulations, and environmental permits
  • Monitor key compliance metrics and implement corrective and preventive actions to continually improve performance
  • Serve as a point of contact for environmental support for the facility and rotate with other team members to provide support on weekends and holidays
  • Identify and implement required training for operations, maintenance, engineering, and other facility staff and maintain adherence to company compliance standards
  • Maintain and grow knowledge of relevant federal and state laws
  • Identify cost effective solutions to proactively address environmental issues, working closely with internal subject matter experts and legal representatives as needed
  • Professionally represent facility at agency meetings and during agency inspections
  • Share knowledge with environmental engineers from other Georgia-Pacific facilities and participate in internal audits of other facilities
  • Proactively interact with operations personnel in the mill to thoroughly understand the environmental process technologies and overall manufacturing processes, communicate environmental requirements and responsibilities, and to answer any questions and address any concerns.
     

What You Will Need:
Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree or higher in Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Pulp & Paper Technology, or other engineering or physical science discipline.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in a dedicated environmental role and/or environmental engineering role OR individuals that are presently or have completed Georgia-Pacific’s Environmental ELP program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in pulp & paper or a similar process industry as an environmental engineer or equivalent process role with environmental involvement.
  • Working knowledge of air emissions requirements and permitting

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment, including a willingness to reach out to others for input on issues as needed
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interface at all levels of the organization
  • Self-starter with strong organization and time utilization skills
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and especially Excel and Word
  • Willingness to work in a tobacco free environment
  • Ability to perform all functional requirements of the position
