Environmental Compliance Coordinator

We have an immediate need for an Environmental Compliance Coordinator located in Chester, Virginia. This role is responsible for the environmental compliance of daily activities involved in the construction of a water treatment plant with responsibilities that include work with our client to identify and manage environmental inspections, spill prevention, containment, and disposal of materials. 

The Environmental Compliance Coordinator will be a resource to project teams by offering support and oversight in the areas of environmental law and regulation compliance, sustainability, contaminated site management, and project due diligence. Site investigations and monitoring, technical support, reporting and coordination with clients, sub-contractors, and regulatory agencies will be involved with the position.

Essential Skills, Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Project Phase 1: Construction, Start-Up and Commissioning
    • Provide technical assistance and guidance for regulatory compliance is such areas as air quality, erosion and soil control, wastewater and storm water management, pollution prevention, chemical storage, and waste management, including waste characterization and disposal oversight on assigned project site.
    • Perform environmental compliance assessments and support implementation of follow-up corrective actions to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Assessments conducted through project review and on-site investigations and routine monitoring during all phases of a project; prepare and submit reports of findings.
    • Inform Leader of regulatory changes with which the Company must comply.
    • Conduct environmental field work, including groundwater, solid, sediment, surface water, and waste material sampling and assorted ecological field investigations and evaluations.
    • Prepares solutions to environmental or safety concerns.
    • Support projects in the following areas: environmental audits, site investigations and remediation, and due diligence transaction projects.
  • Project Phase 2: Wastewater Treatment Plant OperationsUse principles and theories of science and engineering to solve technical problems.Keeps records of programs as required by law and internal procedures.
    • Develop site-specific wastewater treatment plant Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for sample collections and analyses.
    • Develop site-specific wastewater treatment plant Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for process operations including chemical dosing optimization, rotating equipment operations & maintenance, and effluent compliance verification.
  • Interpret regulations and read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Conduct or assist in project-related meetings and assist in project-specific training.
  • Report environmental accidents/incidents to Corporate Safety Manager/company leadership.
  • Continuously evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and ensure adherence to laws and standards.
  • Able to travel to various WesTech Job Sites as needed

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • S. Environmental Studies or related degree
  • Deep understanding of federal/state/municipal environmental health and safety guidelines
  • General understanding of water treatment concepts including total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, pH, sedimentation, general chemistry reactions and coagulation, and be able to utilize this understanding to optimize plant operations
  • Excellent organizational and motivational skills
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observation ability
  • Ability to maintain favorable client relations
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Must be able to complete site entry requirements which may include any/all of the following:Valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record
    • Criminal Background check
    • Drug testing
    • Work site specific training


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and Certifications:
    • Virginia DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector
    • 40-Hour HAZWOPER Certification
    • Experience with site environmental assessment
    • CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid Certification
    • RCRA/DOT Hazardous Materials Handling and Shipping Certification

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to sit at workstation using computer/phone.
  • Frequently required to sit, talk, hear, and see.
  • Frequently required to work at heights, work in confined space, work with chemicals
  • Regularly required to move around the facility.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
