Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist

The mission of the Office of Environmental Health & Safety is to protect the health and safety of all members of the campus community and to ensure the campus complies with applicable codes and regulations. Working directly with an array of faculty and staff, EH&S acts to prevent accidents, resolve unsafe conditions, protect the environment, and provide consultation on environmental, health and safety practices and regulatory information.

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, this position is responsible for managing the campus laboratory safety programs, Theatre & Art safety, and hazardous chemical/waste management programs.


  • Develop, implement and manage comprehensive laboratory safety programs, including but not limited to Chemical Hygiene Plan, fume hood program, emergency showers and eyewashes, bloodborne pathogen, biosafety, radiation and laser safety, medical monitoring, and PPE program.
  • Serve as Chemical Hygiene and Biological Safety Officer, and as backup/associate radiation safety officer.
  • Implement and manage Control Substance Program and Diving/Boating Safety Program.
  • Work with Science faculty and staff to establish policy for purchasing hazardous materials and standard operating procedures and practices pertaining to lab safety and special research.
  • Implement and manage RSS laboratory software for chemical inventory and laboratory assessment/inspection.
  • Perform risk/exposure assessment pertaining to laboratory/chemical/biological safety, conduct inspections, recommend and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Develop, implement and manage injury and illness prevention programs for the Art and Theatre department, including but not limited to rigging safety, fall protection and ladder safety, shop safety, welding and soldering, lockout/tagout.
  • Implement and maintain campus hazardous chemical/waste management programs, to include but not limited to maintaining and updating chemical inventory, reporting requirements (CERS, biennial report, etc) and ensuring chemical and biohazard materials and wastes are properly stored and disposed.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as chemical and hazardous material spills.
  • Conduct safety training and incident investigation.
  • Support Director of EHS in implementing other environmental/occupational health and safety programs as needed.


  • 2 years of experience in environmental/occupational health and safety field, with responsibility implementing and managing health and safety programs.
  • 3 years of experience with biological and chemical safety in higher education or research setting.
  • Experience managing hazardous wastes; knowledgeable in DOT, EPA, RCRA standards, local CUPA requirements, CA health and safety codes, and requirements relating to hazardous material/waste storage, disposal, shipment and clean up.
  • Knowledgeable in compliance requirements pertaining to research activities.
  • Knowledgeable in federal and state occupational/environmental health and safety standards.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral, and the ability to effectively communicate complex health and safety concepts to a variety of audiences. Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Physical Requirement:
Must be able to wear a respirator, walk on uneven terrains, climb ladders and lift moderately heavy items.

Requires general knowledge and skills in the applicable administrative and/or program field with a foundational knowledge of public administration principles, practices, and methods. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.

Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry or relevant science field.
