EHS Senior Biosafety Specialist

The Pennsylvania State University Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking an individual with broad knowledge and experience in all aspects of a sr. biosafety officer. Examples of duties related to the sr. biosafety officer would include serve as the scientific safety officer for research biosafety and bloodborne pathogens programs for the University, provides research safety protocol reviews for Institutional Biosafety Committee, as well as biosafety lead for Select Agent program and research at Pell BSL3 facility, including all commonwealth campuses and research locations throughout the state of Pennsylvania. This position is located at the University Park campus and oversees biological safety programs at all University locations (including all Commonwealth campuses and research locations), except the Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine.

Responsibilities include:

• Manage the University's research biological safety program to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations and guidelines.

• Manage the University's Infectious Waste Disposal Program.

• Serves as the Responsible Official (RO) or Alternate Responsible Official (ARO) for the University in matters related to Select Agent and toxins research. Acts as the liaison between the CDC and the University.

• Oversees the University's Bloodborne Pathogen program. Develops training materials and provides guidance on bloodborne diseases, exposure control measures and emergency procedures.

• Develop and provide train-the-trainer and general training programs for EHS staff, safety officers and general community on biological safety and infectious waste management programs.

• Services on the University committees including but not limited to the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Dual Use Research of Concern (DURC) committee and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) on matters of biological safety and regulatory compliance.

• Develops standard operating procedures for dealing with foodborne and zoonotic incidents

• Participates on EHS team and provides support to further departmental mission.

Typically requires advanced degree in biology, microbiology or related degree. A bachelor's degree with 7 years experience with certification as a Registered Biosafety Professional, is an acceptable substitute for an advanced degree. Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in the area of biosafety with demonstrated successful program implementation results in a research and rDNA environment required. Must submit to and pass the Security Risk Assessment conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice for persons with access to Select Agents.

This includes clearance by the FBI after the start of employment. An incumbent who does not meet FBI requirements cannot fill this position and will be terminated. Must demonstrate a commitment to a community where diversity and sustainability are valued. In addition, excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, and outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with other departments are necessary. Demonstrated experience communicating technical information to a wide range of audiences is necessary. Valid PA driver's license and ability to operate a motor vehicle may be required.
