Division Safety Manager

El Dorado or Little Rock, AR

The Wood Products Division (WPD) Safety Manager will be responsible for setting the strategy and providing continuous guidance, development and improvement of the WPD’s safety programs. This position will report to the VP of Wood Products and is ultimately responsible for building a “world class” safety culture that is employee owned and uniform across the 7 WPD facilities.

This position guides and directs management, site staffing, training, activities, culture and outside resources in support of the divisional safety strategy and goals. This position will also oversee regulatory agency compliance, institutional policies, and continuous employee development. 

Leadership

  • Lead comprehensive division-wide safety program, including policies, procedures, training, and accident and injury prevention programs.
  • Counsel sites on safety-related topics; evaluates effectiveness of safety programs and provide data driven recommendations for improvement
  • Develop and implement accident, illness, and injury prevention training programs including train-the-trainer programs, and monitoring effectiveness of training programs.
  • Oversee investigations of accidents that result in recordable injuries or major equipment or property damage ensuring adherence to root cause analysis best practices and produce reports for management review
  • Direct the implementation of strategies and initiatives that builds a division-wide behavioral based safety and compliance culture.
  • Assist management teams in developing site-specific safety program and activities that align with strategic goals of the division
  • Accountable for providing professional direction to and mentoring of safety staff across the division

Compliance

  • Act as company representative with government agencies in safety matters affecting the company.
  • Ensure facilities are operating within regulatory standards, and provide training, on all aspects related to regulatory compliance
  • Lead annual safety audits, ensuring that findings and action items are supported with factual data, and completed in a timely and professional manner
  • Organize, analyze, and interpret statistical data related to occupational accidents, illnesses, injuries or other hazards and prepare detailed reports and recommendations to operational leaders
  • Author, in conjunction with operations, all safety policies and procedures

Other

  • Lead division wide initiative to achieve OSHA VPP certification at all locations; including the initiation of certification at 3 non-VPP sites
  • Occasionally represent PotlatchDeltic Corporation on technical or advisory committees.
  • Continually research regulations and developments in the field of occupational health and safety and implement changes to the WPD’s programs as necessary.
  • Work jointly and collaboratively with WPD sites to improve efficiencies and minimize costs.
  • Lead and administer Integrated Safety Management System.
  • Attend industry training to keep safety certifications current and stay updated on safety best practices
  • Review and sign off on capital projects to ensure safety is adequately incorporated
  • Oversee all Workers’ Compensation claims to ensure the claimant and the WPD are represented equally and justly.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety
  • At least ten (10) years of progressive safety responsibilities in a multi-plant industrial/manufacturing setting evidenced by a proven track record of success
  • Proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Must demonstrate strong verbal, written, and analytical skills as well as have the ability to interact effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Experience with Integrated Safety Management Systems with an emphasis on behavioural based safety
  • Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification preferred
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work in an open and consultative manner
  • Ability to drive change through all levels of the organization
  • Must be able to organize and prioritize multiple projects
