Director of the Office of Sustainability (Environmental)

San Mateo County is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director, Office of Sustainability. Reporting to the Deputy County Manager, the Director will support the realization of the County’s goal of preserving natural resources through environmental stewardship, reducing carbon emissions and efficient use of land and water.

The new Director will lead a stellar team of sustainability professionals in actively developing, coordinating and implementing sustainability related programs and policies designed to reduce County and community generated greenhouse gas emissions and protect natural resources throughout the county. Current programs are related to climate adaptation, sea level rise, energy efficiency, groundwater and stormwater management, green infrastructure, employee commute alternatives, alternative transportation, community engagement, waste reduction and recycling.

The County is seeking a thoughtful and accomplished leader who will champion the County’s efforts to building a sustainable community that fulfills the needs of the present and future and who is “solving for tomorrow.”


Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:

Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in environmental science, urban or regional planning, public or business administration or related disciplines

Experience: At least five years of increasingly responsible environmental programming experience, including at least two years of managerial experience with responsibilities for planning and directing complex programs.
